He's a crank but Nolan Bushell is crapping on Nintendo again
Oh yeah, Microsoft finally announced the release date of the X1. Out on November 22nd
Sony is having a Japanese press conference tonight/tomorrow morning here at 2AM Eastern.
• On one hand, quite happy that at least Sony is dipping their toes into VR (since Microsoft is going AR with their Fortaleza glasses) but as someone who plays tons of 3D games and has used a buddies Rift dev kit, I just can't be excited about the actual product due to the console hardware. Outside of dev stuff and giving the initial "WOW" euphoria, 720P just isn't good enough for having the screens that close to your eyes. And if you aim for 1080, then you have to worry about the 3D which under 100-120 FPS (50-60 or so per eye) and the wheels start falling off the illusion. Now there are some cuts you can make without effecting your game like dropping the AA a bit (in my experience, my eyes tend glaze over it if it's not too egregious). But you can't start dropping texture quality, then that completely pulls you out of the experience. And unlike on a PC, you just can't throw in more/better hardware for it to work, you're stuck with what you have. If the PS4 was twice as powerful, they could make a real go with it but it's not.
• Well that was quick, I guess Capcom found out that there are a ton of people who still want Blue Bomber games. The totally not a MegaMan clone, Mighty No. 9 by Megaman creator, Keiji Inafune has brought in almost $2 million in funding in just a week on Kickstarter. They blew past their goal in just under two days.
• Microsoft says the 360 has about three years left to live......lol. Though next year's release schedule is sparse from everyone, I just don't see this happening. Only three things known at the moment where you can point to extra life on the console: Project Spark, Destiny and TitanFall. After that, there is a whole lot of nothing.
• Though considering everything they've shown, I don't think this was a shock but for some people it was. Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare is a multiplayer only game
• Popcap also talked about what's new in the upcoming Peggle 2, frankly it just sounds like just more of everything which I'm quite pleased with
• Minecraft got it's first bit of DLC on the 360 with a Mass Effect skin and texture pack which costs $4
• Not the tits you want (Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus) but the TitS you need. Xseed announced that they will be bringing over the PC release of the first Legend of Heroes: Tails in the Sky this winter and the PC/PSP/Vita release of the second game in the series sometime next year. I for one will be double dipping on the first game as I absolutely loved it on the Vita (never owned a PSP) and the sequel is definitely being picked up on me as I want the rest of the games over here.
• I played this a month ago and I still don't get it but this is Cookie Clicker which I was told to mention since a lot of people have been talking about it. It's a time waster where you click a cookie and stuff I guess. It's simple so check it out
• The PC version of the ULTRA jank but surprisingly fun Deadly Premonition gets a release date. Out on Halloween.
• Well, Ryse doesn't look like complete crap in this video
• In a surprise release, GOG is now selling the frustrating I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. Would have never expected to see this again as it was mired in IP property hell. It's a pretty good point & click with a decent adaptation of the awesome novella by Harlan Ellison. $5.99 right here
New trailer for the upcoming Shadow Warrior reboot
• Microsoft gives the skinny on the new and improved Smart Glass for the X1. Sounds sexy
• In news that I'm probably the only one that cares about, Makoto Asada, the dude who spearheaded CAVE's releases on the Japanese 360 has landed with a small group called Mages. He's currently helping them with Constant C and supposedly working on something for the One/360 (conflicting reports) which probably a Visual Novel (it was the last thing he worked on at Cave).
• This is awesome, a Cacodemon plush for $15
• People are saying it's a lazy game (typical for EA and crossgen) but I'm really surprised in how hard the sales of Madden 25 fell off.
• They're bringing out the big guns to get the Japanese interested in World of Tanks as Wargaming.Net has teamed up with hit anime Girls und Panzer to promote the game
• Jim Ryan on Gaikai:""So the plan is to begin with North America next year and the plan is to provide a streaming service that will allow for PS3 content initially to be streamed to firstly PS4, then PS Vita and then PS3," Ryan said. "And so that will happen in 2014 in North America initially. Now and I touched upon these issues of broadband in Europe during the presentation Europe is of course on the roadmap for that service to be deployed at some point in the future, but for reasons outside of our control we don't yet have a timeline for it. So at a show which is now pretty global in its reach but primarily aimed at a European audience, we didn't really want to start talking about the virtues of this great cloud-based service without knowing exactly when it'll come to Europe."
New Releases
Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs - As much as I didn't really care for Dear Esther (kept waiting for it to go somewhere), The Chinese Room were in charge of making a loose sequel (from what I read, there isn't any connection to either Amnesia or the quick expansion pack) to the scariest game to come out in the last 8 years or so. Pre-order it at GOG, Steam, or from Fictional Game's website for $15.99 (retail is $20).
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX - Would have liked them to have included Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days but that was a DS game so you only get a video capping the story from the game. But what you do get are PS3 copies of Kingdom Hearts 1, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and one nonsensical story. The games are fun with visiting Disney properties and the gameplay is fun but man, the story. Would have also liked a $30 price tag but that Square/Disney tax. I am curious in with this coming out so late in North America, how are they going to squeeze in the other 2/3rds of the series in HD collections.
The Elder Scrolls Anthology - Obviously this isn't a collection of new games but a nice looking incomplete anthology. Don't know why they didn't throw in Redguard and Battlespire but it does contain freeware Daggerfall and Arena all dosboxed up for you. Is Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim and a collection of paper maps worth $80 to you?
The Puppeteer - Sony hopes for the best after this game bombed pretty hard in Japan and it does look pretty. I've outgrown platformers so I don't know how the actual gameplay looks.
NHL 14 - Another year and another NHL game. I personally would but I've slowed down my purchases in gear of the new consoles but this one they say they added quite a bit to it and the threw in a NHL 94 mode where everything is basic Genesis controls.
that does it for me this week,
The Dude
