Showdown Day In The Senate For DADT And DREAM Act.
UPDATE: DREAM Act Cloture Vote Underway- Cloture FAILS 55-41.
UPDATE 2X: Repeal DADT Vote Underway
DADT Cloture Passes 63-33

Alternate title: Harry Reid Sucks Up To The Liberal Base Day.

Above the post update:

DADT repeal vote underway. McCain is resigned to losing it.

Just a reminder, Republicans who vote for this are breaking their pledge not to vote for anything until the tax AND budget deals were reached.

Republicans voting for this: Brown, Collins, Kirk, Murkowski, Snowe, Voinivich.

Lying traitors the lot of them.

Just a reminder...the US military would not be harmed one bit if DADT had remained the law. This was about social policy, pure and simple.

That said, the military will make it work. They always do.

Oh one bit of BS that will soon be shown to be just that...supporters of repealing DADT, include SecDef Gates, said it won't happen until the military says they are ready and this will ensure it's done in an orderly fashion and not in an ad hoc way if the courts ordered it.

Does anyone really think the court challenges will be withdrawn? I don't. And if a federal judge finds that there's a right for gays to serve in the military, then what's the rationale for delaying that? Rights don't get put off because it's inconvenient for the government to recognize them, one of the benefits of many rights is that they do precisely that...inconvenience the government.

I bet we see the worst case scenario that Gates and the Joint Chiefs warned of because this whole push has always been about personal edification for a few individuals and the political left, not military necessity.

That said, if the policy was going to be changed, this is the right way to do it. Supporters made their case to the people and Congress and they won. That's the way the system works.

Now we get to sit back and find out all the unintended consequences of this action are.

Original Post below the fold

DREAM Act vote underway, it's going down. Collins, Scott Brown, Snowe, Kirk, Manchin and Tester voted no.

Looks like the only Republican that voted yes is Dick Lugar. It looks like Lugar wants to be the next Arlen Specter. I really hope he gets primaried.

Spoke too soon, Murkowski who is sort of a Republican votes for it.

Robert Bennett (Approriator, UT) voted no. Good job by Utah Republicans go get rid of him. Come on Indiana, you're up!

Sounds like retiring Republican Kit Bond voted yes as well.

FAILS: 55-41 (needed 60 votes to pass).

Onto DADT. That's not going to go as well.

Right now they are debating the DREAM Act.

Here is Jeff Sessions list of ten reasons to oppose this bill.

* The DREAM Act Is NOT Limited to Children -- Applicants can be up to the age of 29

* The DREAM Act Will Be Funded On the Backs Of Hard Working, Law-Abiding Americans -- CBO failed to assess costs for education, increased levels of unemployment due to the addition of workers to the workforce, and increases in potential applicants because of loopholes.

* The DREAM Act PROVIDES SAFE HARBOR FOR ANY ALIEN, Including Criminals, From Being Removed or Deported If They Simply Submit An Application -- Burden of proving inaccurate information on a DREAM Act application is on the Department of Homeland Security.

* Certain Inadmissible Aliens, including those from high-risk regions, Will Be Eligible For Amnesty Under The DREAM Act

* Certain Criminal Aliens—including drunk drivers—Will Be Eligible For Amnesty Under The DREAM Act -- The DREAM Act allows applicants be convicted of 1 felony or up to 3 misdemeanors.

* Conservative Estimates Suggest That At Least 1.3 Million Illegal Aliens Will Be Eligible For the DREAM Act Amnesty. In Reality, We Have No Idea How Many Illegal Aliens Will Apply

* The DREAM Act Does Not Require That An Illegal Alien Finish Any Type of Degree (Vocational, Two-Year, or Bachelor’s Degree) As A Condition of Amnesty -- The applicant only has to complete the equivalent of two years of college.

* The DREAM Act Does Not Require That an Illegal Alien Complete Military Service As A Condition For Amnesty, and There Is already A Legal Process In Place For Illegal Aliens to Obtain U.S. Citizenship Through Military Service

* Despite Their Current Illegal Status, DREAM Act Aliens Will Be Given All The Rights That Legal Immigrants Receive—Including The Legal Right To Sponsor Their Parents and Extended Family Members For Immigration

* Current Illegal Aliens Will Get Federal Student Loans, Federal Work Study Programs, and Other Forms of Federal Financial Aid

DREAM Act looks like it is not likely to pass. In fact, Democrat Jon Tester of Montana announced he's voting no and that has Kos pissed.

Jon Tester to vote against DREAM. Good luck getting reelected, asshole.

Proponents of the DREAM Act love to point out that people applying for amnesty under this act have to either serve in the military or go to college. What do you think the percentage of people choosing the college option will be compared to the military path? The idea that going to college (with tax payer subsidies no less) is somehow paying America back for the opportunity to be here is a joke. I'm surprised that even shameless Democrats can say it with a straight face.

If you listen to guys like Dick Durbin you'd think the only people who become valedictorians in this country our illegal aliens.

It's going to be close but DREAM Act should go down to a well deserved defeat today.

Stray thought...If the DREAM Act applies to so few people as Democrats contend, why do we need to spend so much time on it or do it at all?

It's almost as if the Democrats actions contradict their words.

DADT is something else. There are enough Republicans who have either said they are in favor of repeal or hinted strongly at it that it's likely to pass.

Added: The Good McCain showed up today. He's blasting the hell out of the DADT crap. I wish this Mav had shown up at some point during the campaign. He's quiet on DREAM Act but I think he's a no based on the blocking of amendments and the delay to debate on START.

McCain concedes that DADT will pass and mocks the left for their pending celebrations.

If you need any more proof that the left is simply doing some social engineering and not concerned with the military, look no further than the fact that Barney Frank was in the chair when the House vote was announced. Frank of course is the most well known gay person to serve in Congress. He's also one of the members most hostile to the military. What's the message sent by Democrats placing him in the position of announcing that vote?
