Senator Robert Byrd: Renaissance Man
I've been just as guilty as everyone else on the right of making fun of the whitewashing (so to speak) of the history of Senator Robert "Sheets" Byrd (D, Birth of A Nation), and I feel that its time that we give the dearly departed credit for being more than a caricature of racial hatred and discrimination.
Senator Robert Byrd was much more than a Klan Recruiter who fillibustered the Civil Rights Act.
As a Klansman, he also hated Catholics. And Jews. And brown-skinned foreigners. And Asians. And "Race Traitors" who favored miscegenation.
Remembering him solely as an old man who was WAY too comfortable using "the N-word" on camera is selling him short. It would be like remembering Joe DiMaggio only as the guy from the Mr. Coffee commercials.
He was also a great baseball player.
And a Dago Papist.
RIP, Senator Byrd. If God has a sense of humor (and I pray that he does), he'll let the late Senator spend eternity as a backup dancer for MC Hammer or Biggie Smalls.
