Stargate Universe: Darkness Discussion Thread

Alright, let's give this a try. Last week somebody suggested that SGU could be worth a weekly discussion thread like we used to do with Battlestar Galactica. In fact, his exact words were: "The pilot had a BSG feel to it for sure."

It did, which was part of the pitch to SciFi. The new series requires no knowledge or familiarity with the other parts of the Stargate franchise. It's on Friday's at 9:00pm EST/PST.

Consider this a trial TV discussion thread. If there's enough interest, I'll do one every week like we used to do with BSG.

Below the fold I've tucked a short synopsis of the new show to catch people up. Tonight's episode is the show's fourth. The others are available on Hulu.

From TVTropes:

A team of soldiers and scientists on an off-world base have finally cracked the secrets surrounding the, until now, unused ninth chevron of the Stargates (seven chevrons are used for regular trips, eight are used to travel between galaxies). With it, they are able to connect a wormhole to an Ancient ship called Destiny. This comes at a very bad time as remnants of Stargate SG 1 villains attack the outpost. In a desperate maneuver they travel to Destiny without a proper recon of the area (the planet about to explode behind them) and about 80 people are stuck on a very old ship that is falling apart.

They find that this ship's purpose was to follow another preprogrammed ship, whose job was to seed planets with Stargates. Destiny has been following behind that ship for several hundred thousand years, activating each one as it came in range. The earth team is trapped on the Destiny several BILLION light-years from Earth and must find a way to get home.

Because the mission was not planned, many of the main characters are not the typical specialist team that has been in the previous shows of Stargate SG 1 and Stargate Atlantis. Besides a handful of leaders, the rest are young, inexperienced and many of whom are civilians who are caught up in a situation far outside what they expected.

And it has Ming-Na. Who plays a lesbian. No I'm not making that up.
