ACLU "agreement" with school included prior restraint clause on senior class president's 1st amendment rights
Sweet. Now the ACLU is silencing people before they've even transgressed.
...In January, the Santa Rosa County School District settled out of court with the ACLU, agreeing to several things...
...the district also agreed to forbid senior class President Mary Allen from speaking at the school's May 30 graduation ceremony on the chance that the young woman, a known Christian, might say something religious...
"on the chance" "might". Where I come from this is pretty blatant prior restraint, and the ACLU damn well knows that, and simply didn't care.
To my non-lawyerly techie brain, there is a very "slippery slope" here. The ACLU didn't just put one foot on it, they took a headlong flying leap down it. It makes me sick to think I actually donated money to the ACLU in decades past. NEVER. EVER. AGAIN. EVER.
This is the fucking insane world of Phillip Dick's Minority Report and the notion of "pre-crimes" that haven't happened yet. We are there NOW.
"When a man's ways please the Lord," the Scriptures tell us, "he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him." And is not peace, in the last analysis, basically a matter of human rights--the right to live out our lives without fear of devastation--the right to breathe air as nature provided it--the right of future generations to a healthy existence?
I'm not particularly religious, but that quote immediately above was from JFK in the commencement address he gave at American University June 10, 1963.
If a commencement speaker of JFK's stature (he still has stature, right? or maybe not...) can toss in a religious reference and not be censored for it, I'd suggest that some high school senior in East Pokunk USA aught to be in the clear too. I'm just saying...
