Overnight Open Thread – Happy Days Are Here Again! - (genghis)
Not the ‘70’s teevee show numbnuts (though there’s always a threat that it could happen, so remain vigilant.) Tonight we have the usual grab bag of grabasstic unrelated items.
Item #1: We’ve all heard the well-known saying “even a broken clock is right twice a day.” Not that this link has anything to do with that, but everyone here’s favorite cable network, MSNBC, teamed up with Moody’s.com and put together an Adversity Index. It’s a clickable map of the U.S. that tracks the economies of all 57 states from 1995 to the present, monthly, indicating whether they’re in recession, expanding or somewhere in between. For each month you can click on a state and view additional statistics along with still more statistics for key cities in each state. You can also click a bar at the top which triggers an animation of the map showing how recessions and expansions spread and so forth over the years. It also has pretty colors and a wicked soundtrack by Tool. Or at least it should have.
Item #2: The always innovative food industry is constantly innovatively trying to make meal preparation more convenient and entertaining for us. One of the ways they’ve done so in the past is via pressurized canned spray foods which we’ve all come to know and love, such as spray cheese, whipped cream, string and so forth. Now they’ve introduced a new product I’m sure you’ll love: Spray Pancakes. “So what” you ask. That simply shows your lack of imagination. But that’s why I’m here to guide you. If they’ve started moving into the breakfast market, what other delights may await us in the near future? Yes, it’s just a matter of time until we get SPRAY BACON!!! Dare to hope my friends, for we live in a time of miracles.
Tonight’s sponsor and some music below the fold…
Tonight’s ONT is sponsored by whatever the fuck this thing is that Gabe sent me last night. The pics are in the linked article since they’re too horrifying to swipe and post here. However, according to the article, whatever it is, it’s supposedly edible. Which makes it our friend.
Finally, let’s close out with ONT’s favorite folk singer. A woman who’s always concerned with the plight of the working commenter, performing an old Negro Spiritual from the ‘30’s to cheer us all up and remind us that days are indeed happy and also might be here again:
”The promise of bacon aplenty lies before you, if only you have the audacity to hope. For bacon, that is.”
