Because the UAW wouldn't make the compromises necessary to keep the venture alive.
The reforms Corker insisted upon are reasonable, and the fact the UAW won't contemplate them puts lie to the notion that anything will change without a crisis to force the change.
Manana, Manana: The UAW said no changes for three years.
Which is really an attempt to avoid changes entirely, of course. Get the bailout now, then work to overturn any conditions later.
GM Retains Bankruptcy Counsel: I sense this might be a bluff, an attempt to underscore how desperately they need taxpayer money.
If not -- eh. If you're bankrupt, you should get a bankruptcy lawyer probably, I'm thinking.
