MIT discovers easy Hydrogen/Oxygen splitting from water
Interesting stuff. Can anyone spot what the "problem(s)" here will be with inexpensive water splitting that would allow millions of homes to go "off grid"?
...Nocera hopes that within 10 years, homeowners will be able to power their homes in daylight through photovoltaic cells, while using excess solar energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen to power their own household fuel cell. Electricity-by-wire from a central source could be a thing of the past...
I did a quick calculation a while ago on the square footage available on my roof and it was more than enough surface area, even using inefficient 10% silicon based cells, to power the whole house even running the A/C unit, so what they're talking about here is perfectly doable
from an engineering POV.
Have I dropped enough hints that you can see where the problem is now?
