Colbert is Not Running for President
The South Carolina Democratic Party rejected Colbert's application to be placed on the primary ballot. Colbert's been getting excellent ratings since he started talking about running.
The executive council of the South Carolina Democratic Party voted 13-3 to keep Colbert off the January primary ballot, saying the Comedy Central star did not meet guidelines requiring a candidate to be viable and to campaign actively for the job. Dissenters suggested their colleagues lacked a sense of humor.
And not a moment too soon. Yesterday, I overheard two law students talking about his candidacy as if it were real and not just comedy- and ratings-related.
Colbert probably lucked out anyway. Were he an actual candidate he would likely already be in violation of FEC regulations for in-kind donations from Comedy Central (which features his TV show) and Doritos (which was sponsoring his campaign).
