Time Wasters [OregonMuse]
Ha! I didn't know that the BBC was running a new Robin Hood tv series until my daughter alerted me. I found a torrent download of the first season and I've just finished watching the first episode. It reminds me a lot of the Kevin Sorbo Hercules series in that it doesn't take itself too seriously (and it when it tries to be serious, it fails), doesn't show a lot of concern for historical accuracy, and in fact strews anachronisms about in a deliberately cheeky sort of way.
Like when Robin and his manservant Much are returning home from the crusades to his hereditary estate in Locksley, they encounter a ditch-digging peasant and his bosomy, sex-starved daughter. Now, if this contrived situation isn't enough to cause your eyes to start rolling, the camera does a closeup on the daughter and she's obviously wearing 21st-century lipstick and eyeshadow. They don't even try to hide it. This sort of in-your-face anachronism is either dumb or fun; I think it's more the latter and I'm very much interested in seeing the other episodes.
What? Oh, the timewasters. The BBC put up several flash animation games on their website to promote the series. Here they are.
A little bit more before the fold
When I was a wee lad, there used to be a Robin Hood series that came on Saturday afternoons with Richard Greene in the lead role. Anyone else old enough to remember this? I remember it being pretty good, and decidedly better than the usual crappy Saturday morning tv entertainment (cartoons).
