Language Preservation Dorks Fret That A Language Disappears From The World Every 2 Weeks
They are trying to save them though.
A heavy burden.
From rural Australia to Siberia to Oklahoma, languages that embody the history and traditions of people are dying, researchers said Tuesday
I've been to Oklahoma. Trust me, you can let that one go.
They estimate there are about 7000 languages in the world, and one dies every two weeks. Because people quit using it. I wonder why?
Anderson said languages become endangered when a community decides that its language is an impediment. The children may be first to do this, he explained, realizing that other more widely spoken languages are more useful
It's those goddam kids, figuring out on their own that life might be a little better if they could communicate with someone beside grammy.
No respect.
It seems that the key to revitalizing a language is to bug the crap out of the people who don't want to speak it anymore and plead with them not to stop.
"When we lose a language, we lose centuries of human thinking about time, seasons, sea creatures, reindeer, edible flowers, mathematics, landscapes, myths, music, the unknown and the everyday."
Don't they have words for those things in English and French?
French. If only the French had a word for "entrepreneur", things would be way different there.
