Scott Beauchamp: World's First Documented Case of Pre- Traumatic Stress Disorder
Patterico once again notes the almost inhuman cruelty to which Scott Beauchamp proudly boasts (assuming it actually happened) -- mocking a severely disfigured woman so viciously as to drive her from the room.
Given that, Patterico snipes:
Not only is the guy a huge prick — someone who would mock a disfigured woman — but he’s the type of guy who falsely blames his disgusting behavior on the war.
Why wouldn’t you trust him on everything else??
Inhuman cruelty may not be the same flaw as dishonesty, but it's hard to imagine a man boasting of such little empathy could have much in the way of general integrity.
Which leads to the quote of the day, and quote of the entire scandal, pulled from The Onion. Documenting Pre-Traumatic Stress Disorder -- which Douthat and Chait think it's reasonable to imagine Beauchamp may have been experiencing when he lashed out from the pain of war before actually having been in, you know, war -- The Onion notes that many soldiers are now beginning to experience nightmarish flashbacks to combats they haven't yet fought in:
“I’m not the same man I once was,” Gerard said, adding that he spends every night drinking to drown out the screams and cries for help he expects to hear. “War is going to be hell.”
Perfect.
