This is a really lame vanity post, and I wouldn't post it, except I know that people my age saw this thing a bunch of times -- even if they didn't want to.
A review confirms this:
So you’re in the mood for a little Gilbert and Sullivan, but you also want dick jokes, Christopher Atkins, and a cartoon fish. What you need, my friend, is “XXX XXXXXX XXXXX” the 1982 rock musical debacle that fed into my pre-puberty obsession with Kristy McNichol by running on HBO a good seven or eight times a day back when HBO had nothing better to show.
Anyone know what I'm talking about? Seriously, it was all HBO showed afterschool for the entire year of 1983. You couldn't avoid seeing it even if you tried.
The full review is here. I just watched about half of it (it's free on demand on Comcast) to see if it was as bad/stupefyingly misconceived as I remembered. It was. The very idea you could make a teen sex comedy which was half Pirates of Penzance, half really bad electrosynth music video, half Blue Lagoon, and half gay workout video and expect to make money still astounds me.
(And they were wrong of course. The film was a thunderous bomb and dominated the Golden Rasberries Award with a slew of Worst Awards and even more nominations.)
I have to admit Kristy MacNichol was kinda cute, though. Cuter than I thought at the time. Or maybe I was kind of denying my feelings for her back then.
