Actually, this isn't uncommon. A book called What Cops Know discussed "catburglars," and they weren't using "catburglar" to mean the suave Cary Grant type. "Catburglar" had become cop-slang for burglars wo don't just steal, but have some compulsion to leave nasty things at the scene of the crime. And that seemed to be a pretty common thing.
