Home Survival Tips Wanted
Kind of an open thread format.
Another band of difficult weather is predicted for next week. When electrical losses and freezing temps coincide, we hear a lot of bad stories.
About people not venting their generators to the outdoors, for example. Or people bringing their Smoky Joe charcoal grill in the house for a little heat n' smoke poisoning.
There are some good techniques for making a Winter storm more tolerable, though. Good things to have on hand ahead of time. Ways to keep perishable food safe longer.
We generally keep a battery-powered radio and scanner at hand, lots of candles, a good powerful camp lantern, beer, three kinds of psychotropic drugs, and of course, Komodo Dragon venom and extra syringes.
I know to avoid opening the fridge or the cellar freezer to help keep the perishables cold, but really because the leftovers frighten me with their terrible gibberish-whispering.
In our suburban area, we haven't had any days- long outages in years and years. We don't have a generator. We're ill-prepared for a serious extended emergency. Particularly if we couldn't leave the house.
Please share your tips and suggestions.
