Slurgate: Sabato Says He Never Directly Heard Allen Say "Nigger"
Well... jeeze. Yesterday night I pretty much thought the issue was resolved, against Allen -- I think Sabato's pretty credible -- but now he confesses it's hearsay.
Meanwhile, Webb won't categorically say he hasn't said "nigger" either. His wiggle words are never in a "derogatory" or "racial" way.
Niggah, please. You could drive a truck through those outs.
Look, in all honesty, I've got to say that even liberal, progressive sorts of people have used the word sometime in their life. It's pretty much verbotten at this point, but ten years ago...?
And the more verbotten it's become, the more useful it is in shock comedy. Howard Stern got a lot of play out of a country song about a cowboy hat called "Nigger-Hatin' Hat." Was that actually racism or shock-value ironic racism?
I don't know, and I don't know if Allen falls on the right side of a very blurry line. And if country-boy Webb, he who feared letting women in the services would become a free-for-all for whores and lesbians, never said the word, I'd eat my shoe.
I'm not sure if there's much point arguing this... George Allen seems pretty much done, and he can thank his "macaca" slur for his downfall. Once the presshounds have the smell of blood in their noses, they are implacable.
