David Milch, the series producer, who, by the way despises David Caruso, says Deadwood is one of the most popular shows in Britain (and secured record $$$ for airing in the UK) because the British see it as a vicious critique of America.
I don't think he's really writing it that way. The way he said it, "They think it's an attack on America," had a bit of the twinkle of getting away with something to it.
