Do Pornography College Courses Have Intellectual Merit?
Ummm....is that a trick question?
No?
Oh well, ok.....
[M]y class explored the terrain of Madonna’s music videos. Our first observation: Madonna exposed her breasts. No surprise there. But she did it while wearing a tuxedo jacket. Hmm. The professor’s analysis? Madonna was deconstructing masculinity and femininity.
Years later, I still think Madonna was simply exposing her breasts.
I tend to think she is right, but what do I know? I am just an unwashed heathen who went to an engineering school. Obviously the merits of porn go right over my head.
Because the more someone understands pornography’s social implications and manipulative tactics, the better someone can deconstruct these cultural messages. Knowledge is power. Without it, we are hapless puppets to any industry keen on seducing us.
Actually lady, it is easy to understand and you do not need a college class. Sex sells. Duh.
I doubt the porn barons sit around after a particularly steamy scene, the scent of Astroglide heavy in the air and ponder the social and cultural significance of their line of work.
It's all about the dollars and somehow I just do not see how you can make a college class about that, unless it is an economics class. In that case, it makes perfect sense.
