Nanny-State Nonsense [Say Anything]
Sigh...
BISMARCK -- Lory Harsche is frightened her daughter could get caught up in a "power hour" when midnight strikes on the eve of her 21st birthday.
The Bismarck woman, along with several other mothers, testified Thursday night during the Legislature's Citizens Night, telling lawmakers they should pass Senate Bill 2067, which declares that someone cannot legally drink alcohol until 8 a.m. on their 21st birthday.
I'm not against this legislation for any reason other than the fact that its pointless. Somebody needs to clue these mothers into the fact that if their child is the type to consume 21 shots of alcohol in the hour between midnight on their birthday and when the bars close then they're probably the type to overdo it whenever they drink.
There is no accounting for stupidity. If they're so worried about this issue maybe they should have spent more time with their children teaching them how to deal with alcohol responsibly.
Or maybe we should think about how silly it is to have a drinking age in the first place? Maybe we wouldn't have to worry about 21st-birthday binge drinking if we took away the reason why that particular birthday is so important. Maybe if alcohol were something kids dealt with at an early age (while still living with their parents) they'd learn how to deal with it responsibly and wouldn't think of sneaky adolescent drinking as such a right of passage.
Its just a thought.
