al-Sadr Sends His Decimated Army Back Home

Yes, it has the stink of a political deal.

And yes, by the lights of justice, he should be dead.

But al-Sadr is primarily a threat to the stability of the Iraq government, not us directly. If the Iraqis want to make peace with him, that's chiefly their decision. He's their problem, ultimately, not so much ours. He's only our problem if he actually comes to power. I think it's a smart bet that he won't.
