Under Pressure From Panicking Democrats, Weekend At Biden's Administration Puts Out Trial Balloon That They're Considering Delaying Title 42 Repeal
Title 42 allows the US to swiftly deport illegal aliens. It is a law passed due to the covid emergency. Biden wants to let the law sunset despite also wanting to keep most other covid emergency provisions alive.
And most of those weren't authorized by Congress! (Title 42 is a real law passed by Congress, signed by Trump, but always with the requirement of requiring re-authorization every 60 or 90 days or something like that.)
Numerous Republicans, and Democrats such as Krysten Sinema, keep asking the Weekend at Biden's Administration why other covid measures are being kept in place while they rush to cancel this particular one.
And as illegal aliens are literally camped a hundred yards outside the border, waiting to rush the border the moment Title 42 is repealed. At that point, they can illegally cross the border, and then go through the catch-and-release program in which border apprehension means nothing; they'll be assigned a deportation hearing date which they're never expected to actually appear at.
President Biden's inner circle has been discussing delaying the repeal of Title 42 border restrictions, now set to end May 23, according to a source with direct knowledge of the internal discussion.
Why it matters: The White House is looking for ways to buy time to avoid a massive influx of migrants that would add to already-historic border numbers. That already endangers Democratic incumbents in states that could decide the Senate majority in November.
Biden officials recognize they're in a jam: moderate Democrats are pounding on them to delay the repeal but doing so would inflame the party's progressive base. That includes members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, who are scheduled to meet with the president next Monday.
A full reversal of the decision to end Title 42, announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on April 1, is considered by Biden officials to be far less likely than a delay.
Reversing the decision would effectively force the White House to overrule the CDC.
...
Nine Senate Democrats, including Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan, chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, are urging Biden to reconsider his plan to end Title 42, Punchbowl News reported on Tuesday.
Endangered Democrats are bluntly and publicly warning of a political disaster in the midterms. They're pleading with the White House not to give Republicans an opportunity to paint Democrats as the party of open borders.
"The politics are pretty simple," Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) told Axios. "The Republicans are going to hit Democrats with those videos of people streaming into the United States."
"Title 42 should be kept," said Cuellar, who represents a border district in the Rio Grande Valley. "I know there's a debate inside the administration, but I don't know who is going to win on this one."
Meanwhile, the Weekend at Biden's Administration wants to re-impose mask mandates.
Or maybe they don't.
Or maybe they do.
Who knows? The "President" is a demented old man who Shakes Hands With Ghosts and that is not, at the moment, a metaphor.
Do Biden's words mean anything? Perhaps the Weekend at Biden's Administration should clarify whether they do or don't, Jim Geraghty says.
Biden earlier claimed that it's "up to them" -- up to individual Americans -- whether they will wear masks on airplanes. Hours later, his DOJ released a statement that they were planning to appeal.
If the administration is seeking to reinstitute the mask mandate on air travel and public transportation, then the decision to wear a mask isn't "up to them" as Biden said. It would be nice if the president's morning briefings could offer him updates on what he thinks on issues like this.
Perhaps when Biden said it's "up to them," he was merely "speaking from the heart" again [which is what the White House claimed when Biden announced a new policy of regime change in Russia], which is the White House communications-staff code for "Grandpa is confused. Don't pay any attention to him. What he said doesn't mean anything."
And Krysten Sinema still can't get any clarification: If there's still a covid emergency in the US requiring masking on planes and trains, why is there not a covid emergency at the US border for illegal immigrants?
It must have something to do with The Science (TM) that only Democrat Politicians and Journalists can properly calibrate and transmogrify into its proper beakers and erlenmeyer flasks and those curly-cue things.
