Monday Night ONT - October 19, 2026 [TRex]

20261014-uniroyhaltiredearbornMI1986.jpg

Good evening Horde. Welcome to the Monday overnight thread. The bar is open and the refrigerator has been freshly re-stocked with A&W Rootbeer.

Welcome to the Monday night ONT which means vintage overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Pants are optional. This ONT is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Fauci is fair game.

[Top photo: Uniroyal Tire, Dearborn, Michigan, 1986. The 80-foot-tall fiberglass tire still exists and is located alongside Interstate 94 in Allen Park, Michigan (just outside Dearborn). It was originally built as a Ferris wheel for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair by the United States Rubber Company (later Uniroyal). After the fair, it was disassembled, shipped to Michigan on multiple trucks, and reassembled in 1966 as a static display outside a Uniroyal sales office.]

The Monday ONT has dialed up the wayback machine with very random results.

Advance Roofing, Mims, Florida, 1990. I appreciate the space shuttle homage, but no indication that it still exists.

***

Beef Burger, Amarillo, Texas, 1976. Located at 3102 Plains Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79102. Looks like the building still exists but the business may have recently closed? The interweb says it was originally an A&W Rootbeer stand before the burger place took over around 1952.

Benewah Dairy, Spokane, Washington, 1980. Believe it still exists at 321 S. Cedar Street, Spokane, WA 99201. Now it houses an ice cream shop.

Big Shoe Repair, Bakersfield, California, 2003. Still operates as a shoe repair business at 931 Chester Avenue, Bakersfield, California 93301. The shoe has been hit by wayward cars and repaired several times.

Brown Derby, Los Angeles, California, 1986. Was at 3377 Wilshire Boulevard but no longer exists. It closed in 1980 and demolished, but parts of the hat dome were purportedly incorporated into the new building (Brown Derby Plaza). Can anyone confirm?

Coca Cola Bottling, Los Angeles, California, 1977. Still there at 1334 S Central Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90021. The location still operates as a Coca Cola bottling plant. The building itself is famous - it was designed to look like a ship with portholes, railings and curves.

***

Green Giant, Blue Earth, Minnesota, 1979. It still exists near I-90 and US-169. The interweb says this was purely a local effort to grab eyeballs. The Jolly Green Giant company was not involved and did not fund it.

Life Saver Factory, Port Arthur, New York, 1976. The plant closed in 1984 or 1985 and this large scale Pep-O-Mint life saver version was relocated to Gouverneur, New York (the hometown of Life Savers co-founder Edward J. Noble). It was installed on the village green in 1987 and is still there.

Orange juice stand, Turlock, California, 1977. No evidence this still exists.

Superman, Massac County Courthouse, Metropolis, Illinois, 1993. It still exists at 517 Market Street (also known as Superman Square). This version in 1993 replaced a smaller previous version that was damaged by vandals (why can't we have nice things?). Metropolis is Superman's hometown.

The Hogan, San Jacinto, California, 1977. It was originally built in 1936 as an Indian arts and crafts store (modeled after a Navajo hogan). It is at the corner of Main Street and Sheriff Avenue. The building has had different occupants over the years and new stucco and windows have changed its appearance. It is either a nail shop or tattoo studio today.

You want music in your ONT? What about animation? OK. You get both.
