Seattle passed a measure on Tuesday to extend civil rights protections to non-monogamous people and multigenerational households, and recognize additional sexual orientations and gender identities as protected classes under local law. The city council voted unanimously in favor of the bill.

As the largest city yet to pass such a law, Seattle joins a growing group of local governments acknowledging non-monogamous and polyamorous people as frequent subjects of housing and workplace discrimination, and in need of commensurate protection. Boston suburbs Cambridge and Somerville, and Berkeley and Oakland in California's Bay Area, have previously passed similar policies; Seattle is the 10th city to do so. Advocates say the efforts help local governments serve the many family structures that actually exist, not just the ones that are easy to define.

Research cited by the city council suggests that 10-20% of North Americans have engaged in consensual non-monogamy during their lives, while 5% are currently non-monogamous. More than 50% of respondents to a 2018 academic survey reported experiencing discrimination due to their consensual non-monogamous practices, including in medical settings, workplaces and family court.

Local advocate Jessa Davis helped spearhead the grassroots movement to enact a bill in Seattle after her partner experienced job discrimination in August 2024 due to her non-monogamy. Davis said the experience exposed which forms of discrimination were still "not illegal" in Seattle, even as targeting her partner "based on her sexual orientation or her gender identity or political ideology" would have been "covered in Seattle".

Following engagement with advocates, Seattle's Human Rights Commission penned an open letter in December 2025 in favor of a bill to address discrimination "on the basis of family and relationship structure" and to close "loopholes that currently allow exclusion, harassment, and denial of opportunity to persist unchecked".

EDGEWOOD, Pennsylvania -- The Evans family threw a Halloween party every year in their backyard on Linden Avenue. Neighbor Jeannine Fisher, who lives a few doors down, told WPXI, the local NBC affiliate, that she remembers "tons of people and kids" there. Evans, 46, and his wife, Gina, woke up in their third-floor bedroom to find a man in his underwear attacking them with a kitchen knife. Gina Evans later told police, according to the criminal complaint, that the man was "psychotic" and kept talking about God and being God. She yelled for their boys, 8 and 12, to run to a neighbor's house, and they did. Then, badly wounded, she ran to another neighbor's house herself.

Her husband died in the hospital. He was a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; co-medical director of its pediatric transport team, the doctors who go get the sickest children by helicopter and ambulance; and an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Police found the suspect hiding in the overgrown part of neighbor Sandra Trappen's garden, bleeding from deep cuts on his hands.

"This is not a place, you know, where you would generally feel fearful," Trappen said.

His name is Elijah Hemingway. He is 32 and from Pittsburgh's Hazelwood neighborhood. He is charged with criminal homicide, attempted homicide, burglary, and aggravated assault. He is presumed innocent.

What has unsettled people well beyond this block is what came out over the next 72 hours. Hemingway had been arrested in Allegheny County in July on a felony burglary charge and released without posting a dime. He had spent most of 2025 in a Florida jail and a court-ordered mental-health commitment after allegedly beating a girlfriend and fighting sheriff's deputies. And on Saturday, county police charged him with raping a woman on a footpath in Wilkinsburg, a working-class borough bordering Pittsburgh, about 14 hours before the Evans family was attacked.

Scott McLaughlin stalked, raped and stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death. He was executed by the state of Missouri in 2023. He was not a woman. He was a man. He was a man when he stalked, raped, and murdered his ex-girlfried. He was a man while waiting on death row for his execution.

The Times of London calls him a woman because he began calling himself a woman named Amber while he was in prison. But calling yourself a woman when you are a man does not make you woman. A man who calls himself a woman remains a man who calls himself a woman.

The state of Missouri kept him housed in a men's maximum security prison while awaiting his execution. They allowed him to start taking estrogen in prison because of a successful lawsuit by another male prisoner demanding the right to take estrogen in prison. Taking estrogen did not make Scott McLaughlin a woman. A man who injects himself with estrogen remains a man.

If Scott McLaughlin had never stalked, raped, and murdered his ex-girlfriend, if he had declared himself to be a woman while being a duly employed citizen in good standing and not while a death row inmate, he would still have been a man. Scott McLaughlin was not a woman because he was an adult human male. Because he was an adult human male, he was a man. A man is an adult human male. All adult human males are men. No adult human males are women.

Meanwhile, many upper-income women have adopted a new fad in nail treatment. They're skipping the polish.

In recent months, artsy shots of glossy naked nails have been flooding social media and taking over fashion runways and red carpets, which some are viewing as the latest symbol of "quiet luxury".

But critics argue the bare nails trend actually says something about class, the hamster wheel of beauty standards, and who gets to define what is considered tasteful.

Nail art's historical and creative roots are linked back to black, Latino, and Asian communities and the suggestion that bare nails are now a sign of high status could stigmatise bold manicures, they say.

"That trend really promotes blankness and this kind of sameness and erasure of culture and identity that is so important to black and brown communities," beauty journalist Kristina Rodulfo tells the BBC.

This is partly due to racism -- and partly due to leftwing women's demand that they be validated and praised by everyone else for literally every single trivial thing they do. If some women aren't doing the exact same thing they are doing, then that's not validation -- in fact, that's a covert attack, which must be answered with blistering attempts at cancellation.
