After Supreme Court Declines to Overrule State Supreme Court, Federal District Court Steps In to Allow Missouri to Use Its New Congressional Map for Midterm Elections

This is good for us. The "new" map, created in 2025, has been in use for over a year but was recently disallowed by the Missouri Supreme Court, which ordered the state to suddenly toss out the map that had been in use in favor of the previous 2022 map.

Isn't it strange that courts don't worry about the "chaos" of overturning established election procedures when doing so would help Democrats? And that this "chaos" factor is only used to overrule Republican initiatives, like Trump's EO to the Post Office to scan mail-in ballots for actual voter eligibility?

Well, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals apparently does think that the "chaos" factor should help Republicans just as other courts use it to help Democrats. He overruled the Missouri Supreme Court, pointing out that the "new" 2025 map has been the one candidates have been operating under for over a year and it would cause chaos to suddenly revert to the 2022 map, which has different district maps than the ones which have voted for the current candidates.

A federal appeals court ruled Monday that Missouri must use its Republican-favored 2025 redistricting map in November, despite the Supreme Court declining twice this month to intervene in the dispute.

The Supreme Court allowed a decision from the Missouri Supreme Court to take effect earlier this month, which ordered Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins to use the 2022 map that favored Republicans in a 6-2 split.

The new 2025 map, which was used in the state primaries last month, favors Republicans in a 7-1 split by erasing Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's Kansas City-based district, according to Politico.

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the new map causes the least amount of confusion for voters this year because they have already used the map this year, but it allowed redistricting opponents one week to get relief from the Supreme Court.

"For approximately one year, Missouri operated under the 2025 map," the panel majority wrote. "During that time, Missourians filed to run for Congress, met candidates, watched campaign advertisements, received campaign mail and voted under the 2025 map.

"Any confusion stems from the last-minute decision by a state court to switch the congressional map," it added.

That's a little bit of good news to start this rainy day.
