Record heatwaves in France set to make champagne stronger

Champagne lovers may find themselves getting tipsy more quickly after French producers have been given the go-ahead to raise the alcohol content in a bottle of bubbly for the first time following this summer's record heatwave.

Winemakers can temporarily produce champagne with an alcohol content of up to 15% - above the 13% cap, industry officials have said.

The extreme heat and drought produced grapes with exceptionally higher sugar levels. Yeast converts sugar into alcohol during fermentation.

The temporary increase in champagne's alcohol content is only expected to affect a small number of wines, a spokeswoman for the Comite Champagne told the BBC.

During the second fermentation process, which gives champagne its bubbles, "a very small number of wines from this harvest could have slightly exceeded the regulatory limit of 13%, reaching around 13.1% or 13.2%."

"Therefore a decision was made to exceptionally and temporarily increase the regulatory limit to 15% - only for this year," she said.

I shouldn't be surprised but I did not know that French regulations set the max for Champagne. That being the case, I'm also surprised at the decision. Only a small number that might possibly go over by a tenth or two, so let's raise the limit by two percent. If you're going over, might as well go big!

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Project Farm. Todd is the YouTube modern day version of Consumer Reports. He takes a product segment, buys the products, evaluates them and shares the results.

The YouTube genre of product comparisons is crowded. "Buy this!" "Avoid this!" "Epic comparison of XYZ tools!" Most come across as shallow and clickbait. Todd has a formula that is not shouty, consistent, and infuses science and objective measures to reach concrete conclusions.

He started nine years ago with videos that mostly asked and answered "Does this work?" type questions. He accepts no sponsorships or promotional items from manufacturers. He relies on YouTube and Patreon for funding.

His niche is the shop and home - hand and power tools, lubricants, batteries, cleaners, flashlights, engine additives, paper shredders, etc. He tries brand names and no-names across the range from expensive to cheap.

The channel has over 3.93 million subscribers. Video counts vary by product, but often approach and exceed a million views each. He typically posts one new video a week.
