A three year-old boy was in a critical condition on Thursday night after he was thrown into a crocodile enclosure at a Cambridgeshire zoo.

Police said they had arrested a 30-year-old British man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident at Johnsons Zoo, near Huntingdon, on Thursday afternoon.

The suspect and the boy, who was taken by air ambulance to Addenbrooke's hospital with serious injuries, were not believed to have known each other, officers added.

Johnsons Zoo has 10 species of crocodile, which visitors can view from a raised platform above the Tropical House enclosure.

The Telegraph understands that several crocodiles were in the enclosure when the child entered the water.

It is believed that the zoo owner's wife, Tracey Johnson, jumped into the enclosure to rescue the child.

It has not been specified whether the boy's injuries were caused by an attack by the crocodiles, or by the fall into the enclosure.

The enclosure contains at least 15 crocodiles and alligators, including two of the largest - Nile crocodiles called Romeo and Cuddles. Both are believed to measure between 9ft and 11ft, with Romeo, the male, weighing up to 485lbs.

It is not yet known whether the boy sustained all his injuries from the fall or if he was also attacked by one of the animals - but an expert has confirmed that if the child fell next to a crocodile he will have been bitten.

He's a violent monster who attempts to feed babies to crocodiles. There are limits to compassion and this is eight or ten miles beyond that limit. Even if you don't actually imprison him in a prison, you have to imprison him in a locked room.

But the UK justice system disagrees.

Whether or not this is a case of a foreign-born Cultural Enricher or a homegrown Cultural Enricher... police have already released the "man" who attempted to murder a three-year-old by feeding him to crocodiles.

How is releasing someone back into the public before they've even been interviewed for attempted murder acceptable?
