The Morning Rant: Will Europe Grow Up?
One of the more corrosive aspects of American foreign policy with respect to NATO and Europe has been the infantilization of Western Europe. After World War II they quickly became militarily subservient to America, which, while understandable, created the conditions necessary for their massive welfare states and an equally massive shift toward cultural passivity. No longer did they see themselves as defenders of their countries and their lives...that was America's job, while they enjoyed six weeks of vacation and cradle-to-grave social services. Never mind that their medical care was awful, and their standard of living lagged far behind America's...everything was being done for them, including protecting them from the consequences of their passivity...the loss of martial spirit, patriotism, love of native culture, etc.
The results are clear! Europe is being subsumed under a tidal wave of third world immigration, led by the revolutionary political philosophy of Islam, that without some cataclysmic change will soon rule the UK, France, Belgium, and perhaps others.
Regardless of America's previous domination of European defense, it is high time that their cultures mend themselves and take responsibility for their military failings. It is axiomatic that a country that cannot defend itself cannot long survive, even in our post-modern malaise. The hordes crashing Europe's borders care not a whit about self-actualization and pronouns and transsexualism and gay marriage and policing free speech. They care about conquest, and they will succeed!
ECFR Poll: European Trust in US Defense Commitment Plunges
Europeans are increasingly questioning whether the United States would come to their defense in a military crisis, according to a new survey showing confidence in America's security commitment has fallen to record lows.
The poll, released Wednesday by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), found that only 11% of respondents across 15 European countries now view the United States as an ally "sharing our interests and values," down from 22% in November 2024.
Researchers said the findings reflect "deep European distrust in the U.S." ahead of upcoming G7 and NATO summits.
While most Europeans still see America as a "necessary partner," majorities in every country surveyed said they no longer believe the U.S. would necessarily come to their aid if they were attacked.
This is magnificent news! It is the first step for Europe moving out of America's basement and finding its own place in the world! The real question is whether the existential ennui that infects most of Western Europe can be banished as they see the consequences of their subservience to American power.
Will France regain the martial spirit of de Gaulle? In 1966, he demanded that all American troops must leave France, and France left NATO's integrated command structure, leaving it as a free agent. Good or bad...it was national self-determination, and it stiffened the backbones of the French.
Will The United Kingdom regain the cold resolve of Margaret Thatcher, who dispatched the Royal Navy 8,000 miles to defend the Falklands? That was the last gasp of patriotism in the UK!
Will Germany return to the Germany of the 1980s; with a superb armed forces that knew it was first to do battle with the Soviet juggernaut, and was determined to succeed?
Time will tell, and the smart money is against all of that, but rejecting American dominance and accepting that they are all independent countries is a good start.
