The Rev. Jesse Jackson, a defining figure in late 20th-century American politics and the civil rights movement, died early Tuesday at 84 after a prolonged battle with illness, according to a statement from his family and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Jackson had been living with progressive supranuclear palsy, a degenerative neurological disorder similar to Parkinson's disease. He was hospitalized in mid-November as his condition deteriorated. After disclosing the diagnosis publicly in 2017, Jackson referred to it as a "physical challenge" and continued to appear at public events and comment on political matters even as his health declined.

In a statement posted online, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition said Jackson "died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family," describing him as a civil rights leader whose impact spanned generations.

President Trump weighed in with a lengthy tribute, noting that he had known Jackson "long before becoming President." Trump called him "a good man, with lots of personality, grit, and 'street smarts,'" and described him as "very gregarious -- someone who truly loved people."

He certainly loved lodging invented accusations of racism against companies and then coercing them into paying him millions and hiring on his staffers and useless family members.

Unrelated, except by the word "Rainbow:" Chuck Schumer wants to give the gay flag equal status with the American flag.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer escalated the culture fight Sunday, announcing he will introduce federal legislation to make the Pride flag a "congressionally authorized symbol" -- elevating it to the same statutory category as the American flag, military service flags, and the POW/MIA banner.

In a post on X, Schumer accused President Trump of attacking "not just the LGBTQ community," but "all of us who care about pride and equality in NYC," after a Pride flag was removed earlier this month from the Stonewall National Monument.

"The Stonewall Inn is sacred ground," Schumer claimed, framing the episode as an assault on civil rights history rather than a dispute over federal flag policy.

The flap began after the Department of the Interior issued guidance directing that "non-agency" flags be taken down at National Park Service sites. The Pride flag flying near the Stonewall Inn came down under that directive before later being reinstalled.

Schumer's proposed legislation would lock in formal federal recognition for the Pride flag, placing it under congressional protection and insulating it from future administrative policy shifts.
