Gun Thread: Final October Edition!

102625 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the final October edition? Happy Halloween! Do you get trick-or-treaters?

I'm happy to be home from all the traveling recently, but definitely missing seeing all of all y'all in Texas. Only 51 or so more weeks until TXMoMe XI!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

FUNdamentals

Fundamentals of seeing what you're shooting, that is.

So as your eyeballs get old and dry out it becomes difficult to focus on sights and targets. I, of course, am immune to this but I have heard it's a thing. Anyhoo, in order to be one of the cool kids, some time ago I began wearing my reading glasses when shooting handguns. My Ophthalmologist knows I am a shooter and gave me the correct magnification (around 1.5x) to focus at just beyond arm's length, or approximately where the front sight post will be.

It worked!

Sadly, I also found out I had not actually invented this, and lots of other shooters were doing the same thing. But is it the only way?

What do you think?

Cigar of the Week

This week our pal She Hobbit scores with this excellent review of the My Father - Flor de las Antillas

As a simple hobbit, I am not skilled in the intricacies of cigar reviewing. However, I do appreciate a nice smoke and would like, if you don't mind, to share my impressions of the My Father - Flor de las Antillas. So grab a drink (I'm having Diet Dr. Pepper and Kraken, don't judge me!), and join me on the patio while I queue up a Bella Hardy playlist for a relaxing fall evening.

Any self-respecting hobbit knows that a good meal starts with your eyes, a concept I would argue extends to cigar smoking. In that vein, I've been known to make cigar selections based on sticks that tickle my visual fancy, and the Flor de las Antillas sure meets the mark. It is truly just a beautiful cigar, from its rich brown wrapper, to the endearing crimson ribbon, and finally the ring, which is a legitimate work of art. This is such a nice-looking cigar that it is almost a shame to smoke it... almost. Tonight, I'm having this beauty in Toro since my local shop was out of Robusto. Hey, more to enjoy! And since summer is finally losing its grip on my area of the Shire, I don't mind lounging outdoors for an extended time.

The best word I can use to describe the flavor of the Flor de las Antillas is smooth. From start to finish, it provides a pleasant smoking experience. It offers a nice steady transition from mild/medium at the beginning through medium/full-bodied at the end. Being a non-expert, I can't pick out particular flavors but get impressions like creamy with a bit of spice early on, spice intensifying over time, and gaining some hints of coffee toward the end. This cigar is never harsh, even on retrohales, making for a completely pleasing hour and a bit. Its satisfying production of smoke, firm ash, and pretty consistent burn line mean I can enjoy it without much fuss or effort, definite pluses at the end of a work day. Overall, I find the My Father - Flor de las Antillas to be a thoroughly enjoyable smoke. It could give Old Toby or Longbottom Leaf a run for their money, should the Southfarthing producers decide to branch out of pipes into cigars.

Excellent, She Hobbit! Thank you! It was great to visit with you in the cigar lounge in Texas!

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!
