Grave Diggers Compete in the 8th International Grave Digging Championship

Every year, grave diggers from around the world gather in Hungary to compete in the International Grave Digging Championship.

Every year since 2016, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, Hungary’s Association of Cemetery Operators and Maintainers (MTFE) has been inviting grave diggers from all over the world to the European country to compete for the title of World Grave Digging Champions. Working in teams of two, grave diggers must put their abilities to the test by digging graves that are 2 meters long, 80 centimeters wide, and 1.6 meters deep within two hours, and then shoveling the approximately 2.5 tons of dirt back into the holes to create a neat burial mound. It sounds easy enough, but speed, accuracy, and attention to detail are the main criteria by which contestants are judged.

Dear readers, prepare to swoon! The Trump state visit to Britain was a world wind fashion extravaganza. It was castles, carriages, hats, and tiaras. On to the fabulousness!

Melania strutted off Air Force One serving equestrian chic with a wink to the Brits in a floor-length Burberry Kensington Heritage trench coat, belted to perfection and Christian Dior Empreinte riding boots. She topped it all with Saint Laurent sunglasses.

The Windsor Castle welcome was a straight-up fever dream. Melania sashayed in wearing a structured dark grey Dior Haute Couture skirt suit, topped with a purple wide-brimmed Dior hat so fierce it deserves its own fan club. The President matched her vibe with a navy suit and a purple tie, a rare non-red moment we’re loving. We almost want to say “yesss, King!”

For the Royal Library and Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House tour, Melania turned it out in a bespoke caramel leather skirt suit by Louis Vuitton, paired with snakeskin Manolo Blahnik pumps. It was giving earthy elegance.

Melania showed her soft side (and serious style) by joining Princess Kate for a Squirrel Scout event at Frogmore Cottage. (Squirrel Scouts? Sounds like a cute cartoon plot, right?) She wore a Ralph Lauren Collection Bryan Belted Lamb-suede jacket and Roger Vivier u-cut, buckle-embellished flats in brown. In a subtle shade of I can’t be bothered, Melania simply changed her shoes and added sunglasses to meet with Kier Starmer and his wife, choosing Manolo Blahnik BB 105 pumps in brown snakeskin and Elizabeth and James Adler Square monochromatic sunglasses in black.

Many of us are still shook by the state banquet. Melania wore an off the shoulder yellow column gown by Carolina Herrera, lilac belt, and paired with Manolo Blahnik nude heels. The dress didn’t photograph well, sometimes looking bright yellow (it was more butter) and the belt sometimes looked pink (it was lilac). This look was either a total yes or a hard pass, not much in-between. It nodded to the Queen’s favorite colors, but that off-the-shoulder moment had etiquette police clutching their teacups. But Princess Kate? She shut it down in a Phillipa Lepley Darling Coat gown in bespoke gold, paired with Aquazzura Felix 105 pumps in gold and an Anya Hindmarch Maud Pearls clutch in champagne (bespoke, obviously). Add Queen Elizabeth’s diamond orbital pendant earrings and Queen Mary’s Lovers Knot Tiara, and I am still out here trying to catch my breath.

Spirit fingers, pom poms and loud stadiums all around! The cheerleaders are high kicking and sashaying to the beat. Among them is Betty Lou, the queen of the squad. Her high kicks are legendary, but her elbows? Oh, honey. We’re not saying she’s attractive (because we’re classy like that), but those elbows could star in a geometry textbook. Pointy score: 9/10.

On the flip side, there’s poor Mildred last on the right. Her elbows? Tragically unpointy. They’re like marshmallows squished into her sweater, soft and undefined. Mildred’s heart is in the right place. Pointy score: 3/10.
