Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. A spin of the Ace of Spades Wheel of Hobbies (TM) landed on surfing and waves.
I have faith that you can either find something in the content that resonates or contribute your own hobbying interests.
You might be tempted to say "I have no hobbies or interests." Bah. Dig around in the content and soak in the comments. Be curious. Glad you're here.

What are you hobbying?
As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. All (legal) hobbying is welcome. However, politics, current events and religious debates can live in threads elsewhere. Current events are still on our minds, but let's stick to hobbying here. Pants are optional. Puns are welcome and encouraged.
Play nice. Don't be a troll and do not feed the trolls.

Surfing is a hobby for some but a way of live for others. Are you a surfer? Were you a surfer at an earlier stage of life? Have you never surfed but curious to try?
Are you entranced by waves? Can you sit and watch waves break all day?
Even if you're not wise in the ways of the surfboard, the best places to surf are often in beautiful locations. This thread can be about surfing, the art of the wave, and the travels to enjoy memorable parts of the world.
We will do a separate proper Hobby Thread at some point on sea shells and related gathering, collecting and art projects.

"The Wave" in Newport, Rhode Island:
The feet and the accompanying wave are courtesy of artist and sculptor Katharine Worden, a familiar figure in the lively Newport art community. In 1983, Worden unveiled "The Wave." The design was a twist on Hokusai's famous work. Worden's wave swaps the intense majesty of Hokusai's piece for one that is a bit more humorous. A pair of feet stick straight out from the bronze wave pointing right towards any and all passerby.
Newport locals have taken "The Wave" under their wing in their own special way. In the summer, the statue's feet shine bright as the bronze is polished by the hands of passersby. During the winter, when Newport becomes cold, anonymous locals will put socks on the feet.

Most modern surfboards are not made of wood. These are:
This has nothing to do with surfing, but has everything do with waves and the US Navy. Since this is a quasi-smart military blog and some Morons have served in the Navy, it gets included:

Stand up Paddleboarding is not surfing, but we will include for Hobby Thread giggles. Anyone do this?
Did you miss the Hobby Thread last week? We did a horse theme. The comments may be closed, but you can re-live the content.

Words of wisdom:
"Because despite all our troubles, when things are grim out in that wide round world of ours, that's when it's really important to have a good hobby." Posted by: tankascribe at June 22, 2024 07:41 PM (HWxAD).
