Kewl Stuff over in The UK

Tiny Robots Can Help Fix Leaky Old Water Pipes Without Having to Dig Up Roads

doof-Pipebots.jpg

Tiny robots could help fix leaky water pipes without having to dig up roads and sidewalks, thanks to a British team.

The miniature machines called ‘Pipebots’ are the same size as a toy car and can track down leaks underground. They can also identify potential issues before they even become a problem.

University researchers say the Pipebots could revolutionize how water infrastructure is managed and help save some of the nearly 800 million gallons of water lost through leaky pipes every day in England and Wales.

Read the whole thing. Very ingenious engineering.

Here is a video which is included in the story

Anyone familiar with this technology and/or seen applications here in the States?

Meanwhile, in Spain

Hell hath no fury like a - (checks notes) - Beekeeper(??) scorned

Angry Beekeeper Sets Bees on Police During Routine Traffic Stop

A 70-year-old Spanish beekeeper was so upset about being stopped by traffic police that he set his bees on the officers, causing them to take shelter in a restaurant. An unusual incident took place last Friday, on the N-II road in Cervera, a small town in the Catalonian province of Lleida. A local police patrol noticed that the driver of a van wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was driving erratically, so they pulled him over. The 70-year-old man immediately set the tone of the interaction with the phrase “I should have run you over!” and things only got more heated from then on.

***

“Now I’m going to kill you,” the irritated beekeeper allegedly shouted at the traffic cops

Check out the whole story.

Somehow, my brain now recalls 2 times when bees were featured / mentioned on Cheers

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

Royal Ascot 2025: A Spectacular Display of Fashion and Tradition

Royal Ascot, Britain’s iconic five-day horse racing event, rivals our beloved TxMoMe in its blend of prestige and sartorial splendor. Renowned for its world-class equestrian competition, it’s equally celebrated for its strict dress code, which inspires a dazzling parade of high fashion and theatrical flair.

Leading the daily royal procession, King Charles and Queen Camilla set the tone. My favorite of Queen Camilla’s looks was a stunning silvery-blue bespoke Dior coat dress, paired with a matching Philip Treacy hat. She carried a white Launer London Tosca clutch and wore neutral Chanel cap-toe pumps in beige and black. The true showstopper? Her Cullinan V Diamond brooch, so exquisite I suspect the dress was designed to showcase it.

Princess Anne, ever pragmatic, made waves by recycling a chic outfit from 1987. Did she think we’d forget? And could that be a young Prince William?

Princess Beatrice turned heads throughout the event. On day one, she glowed in a Beulah London Gabriella pink and white gingham tweed blouse, paired with a matching Arabella skirt. Her ensemble was completed with Jennifer Chamandi Vittorio 105 pumps in sand patent leather with a white toe cap, an Anya Hindmarch Mortimer clutch, and a sculpted sand-colored scroll percher hat by Juliette Botterill.

On day three, Beatrice went bolder with a vibrant Monique Lhuillier sunflower floral day dress that I’m absolutely obsessed with! She accessorized with a Justine Bradley-Hill Camellia Crystal beret, bisque suede Gianvito Rossi 105 pumps, and a white alligator Mark Cross Romy clutch.

Zara Tindall, a personal favorite (we’ve ridden together, so I’m a bit biased), stole the show on day three with an elegant black-and-white ensemble. Her ivory Laura Green Camille shirt dress was paired with a bespoke Juliette Botterill boater hat, a black Mulberry Amber clutch, and Laurence Costello Cosima earrings. She added a playful touch with Jacques Marie Mage Kellerman sunglasses in brut. The highlight, though, was her recycled Emmy London Rebecca pumps, adorned with Emmy London Golden Dome clips. Shoe clips—are they making a comeback?

For the gentlemen, Prince Edward proved timeless style reigns supreme with a vintage Hermès Equestrian 7371 tie in pink (and yes, it’s pronounced ehr-mez, not air-maize). A nod to classic craftsmanship that never goes out of fashion.

Royal Ascot is more than a horse race—it’s a celebration of British heritage, where men in morning suits and top hats and women in stunning dresses with statement hats create a regal spectacle. It is a perfect blend of formality and theatricality.

Thank you, Piper - for providing the Sunday ONT content that people actually look forward to.
