Feel good story

He Traveled 10,000 Miles To Thank The Man Who Saved His Life

doof-donor.png

In a powerful moment years in the making, two strangers who now share an unbreakable bond finally met face to face in the town of Preston, England—half a world away from where their story began.

Luke Melling, 31, from Melbourne, Australia, had battled Hodgkin lymphoma since he was 16. After several relapses and years of grueling treatment, he was told that his only hope for survival was a stem cell transplant. With no match found in his family or even across Australia, the search went global.

After six long months of uncertainty, the answer came from 10,000 miles away: Alastair Hawken, a father-of-three from Lincolnshire, UK, was a perfect match.

Alastair, who runs a gingerbread business, sees his donation as part of his legacy.

“If I achieve nothing more than just seeing that smile on your face, then I’ve achieved everything I need to achieve.”

Now fully recovered, Luke has even run a marathon and is urging others to consider joining the stem cell donor registry.

Alastair hopes their story inspires more people to register.

“There’s nothing that makes you feel more complete as a human being—and when it’s a success story like this, it makes everything worthwhile.”

Challenge for The 3D Printing Hordelings

Can you do better?

Tor Alva – The World’s Tallest 3D-Printed Building

doof-Tor-Alva-3D.jpg

Towering above the rooftops of Mulegns, a picturesque village in the Swiss Alps, the recently unveiled Tor Alva (White Tower) is the world’s tallest 3D-printed building.

Mulegns, a tiny village of only 12 permanent residents nestled at the foot of the Swiss Alps, hardly seems like the perfect place to install the world’s tallest 3D-printed building, but local authorities decided that the unique installation could help revitalize the slowly fading community. Tor Alva stands 30 meters high and has a modular design featuring a total of 32 individually printed columns connected by giant screws and steel cables rather than glued with cement. No steel frame was used when printing the tower’s pieces, but its creators claim that the technological innovations showcased by the tower make it both extremely safe and easy to dismantle and move, if necessary.

***

Tor Alva was unveiled on May 20, 2025, in front of a crowd of about 300 excited people who were then able to climb the 3D-printed stairs of the tower all the way to the top floor, which acts as a domed theather for various artistic performances, but also as a platform for taking in the breathtaking alpine scenery.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

------

sí, sí, puedes!

Summer 2025 is heating up and cut- out dresses are on point. From subtle key holes to more daring reveals, there are multiple options available to rock this trend with confidence!

• Daytime Chic: For a casual summer look, opt for a flowy maxi dress with side cut-outs in vibrant hues or floral prints—both are trending heavily this season. Pair it with strappy sandals and a woven tote for a beachy vibe.
• Evening Glam: For date nights or summer soirées, go bold. Metallics and jewel tones are making waves this year. Elevate the look with statement heels and minimal jewelry to let the dress shine.
• Layering for Versatility: Pair with a lightweight blazer or denim jacket for cooler evenings.

A few options to consider:

You know I love a good Farm Rio dress! This Off-White Palm Euroflax™ Maxi Dress screams summer and the cut outs offer a more modest approach to the trend. The fabric is breezy and the print is so fun.

Another option from Farm Rio that is a more covered up version of the trend is this Off-White Richelieu Euroflax™ Maxi. The shoulder straps are adjustable. Remember, Farm Rio makes a really nice product, but their sizing is very inconsistent. Read the reviews before purchasing as you may need to size up or down.

This dress is from Beyond Yoga and gives a more relaxed option to the trend without being overly revealing. I have it in navy, it’s one of those dresses you can just throw on with white or tan Superga mules and go in both comfort and style. Sandals, espadrilles, flats are all easy to wear with this dress.

Interested in a higher end option? Ivanka Trump wore this Joanna Ortiz Into the Wilde dress to the Style Saves event. Style Saves is a non-profit that raises funds through fashion focused events to provide underprivileged students with new clothing, shoes and accessories. Yes, that is Rachel Sager with her.

I could not go this week without highlighting our Second Lady!

Usha Vance wore a gorgeous Badgley Mischka square neck floral midi dress to the Military Mothers celebration on May 8. The shoes are Stuart Weitzman Nudist Block Metallic Leather Sandals in gold. Very on trend!
