Ace of Spades Pet Thread, April 26

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Who grooms your dog?

Courtesy Hrothgar:

SisterH had a disabled Corgi with add-on rear wheels that was incredibly mobile!

How great!

Conor looks like a happy dog! But we would expect him to be happy, wouldn't we?

Piper - 2 m.jpeg

Piper - 1 m.jpeg

Meet our one-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix (Red Heeler variety) who was named Piper by our granddaughters. She came to us at three months of age after having been found abandoned at about 6 weeks old on the nearby Navaho Reservation in Utah. A rescue group called Underdogs took her in, fostered her and rehabbed her for several weeks. She has fit in well with our senior citizen Australian Shepherd Buckley who showed up on the Pet Thread some years ago. They spend a lot of time rough housing and play fighting.  He teaches her all his old bad habits and she teaches him a few new ones of her own.  All in all a positive lift for the old boy.

She stands about 16 inches at the shoulder and weighs about 50 lbs. She has freakishly long legs.  She is not the smartest dog I've ever had but the d'awwww cuteness factor is off the charts. Who's a good girl?regards, muldoon

Wow. You're right about the cuteness factor. That portrait is remarkable.

On the left is our dog Kroger on the right is our guest Shanti. As you can see, Kroger was sharing his bed under protest. Thankfully, no squabbles broke out from it.

Great photo. It can be hard to share . . . .

This is the last entry we received for the Pet Thread from jewells45 (November 2, 2024 post). She sent us information on rescued dogs at:

Shep's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary in Independence, MO

Making jewelry, often for members of The Horde, was one marvelous connection Jewells had with AoSHQ, but it certainly was not the only one.

She was also remarkable for her dedication to senior dogs in need. Many of us looked forward to her updates.

From Jewells:

Brody.jpg

This is Brody, a rat terrier we rescued from the Independence MO animal shelter. He's 15 years and is a cuddle bug.

It felt like things had stagnated at Sheps's over the past year or so but I think things may finally change. JJ finally got adopted and was the reason we could never bring a small dog into the mix. He found the perfect home. Then sadly Roscoe and Hope both crossed the rainbow bridge. They were our 2 invalids.

We have also begun earnest fund raising to make big improvements to Shep's including an expansion of the original building. The cost is $900,000 and we have raised about $200,000 so far. I'm hoping to sign up to volunteer very soon.

Jewells was thinking about the future of Shep's Place and the dogs served by the volunteers there even as her health declined. Donations from members of The Horde have been suggested in several posts here at AoSHQ. Check in the comment thread below for specific information on donations already underway.

Jewells has introduced us to quite a few loveable senior dogs at Shep's Place over the years. We're going to miss you and the sweet dogs, Jewells.

Here are a few more, from July 6, 2024:

3 doxxies.jpg

From Jewells:

These three cuties are the newest addition to Shep's. Again, they went straight to foster so I'll never get to meet them darn it! Maudie is 12, Augie is 11 and Chug is 8. Their owner passed away. We are hoping to adopt all three out together.

What adorable doxies! And they are not all the same. Thanks for sending the great photo, Jewells!

And we also met her own grand pup, Moose. He knew when she didn't feel good and tried to make her feel better. Good boy, Moose.

crows r ravens.jpeg

We call them crows although they may be ravens. Picture is from my car going down my driveway. They landed about 20 feet from my car. I stopped and took pictures because one was playing with a stick and one had a piece of bread, which means a neighbor is feeding them. I hate them!

NorCal Sierra Foothills Lurker

So, to the rest of The Horde, what are your thoughts about crows and ravens? Like them around? Wish they wouldn't scare off other birds? Do they ever intimidate your pets?

Why do you think the neighbor is feeding those crows?

We get crows, along with other birds, in our yard. The crows are usually the boldest birds around the garden kitties.

Thank you for sharing your pets with us.

I am going to be in the hospital for a little while, but If you would like to send pet and/or animal stories, links, etc. for the Ace of Spades Pet Thread, the address is:

Until next time, have a great week!
