Gun Thread: First April Edition!

040625 calendar-2025 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be April? Do you know what that means? Do you know? Hmmmm??

Q: Weasel, what does it mean?
A: It's NoVAMoMe planning time!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

FUNdamentals

Fundamentals of MoMe'n, that is.

The official date is Saturday, June 21st, so mark that on your calendars. We will again have a sign-up process but have decided to forgo the pre-paid buffet in favor of just having people order for themselves from the casual cafe-style menu. We'll have more exciting news and specifics to share soon!

We sincerely hope you can join the festivities. I promise you this event is as laid back and non-anxiety inducing as humanly possible, and nothing makes me happier than to meet new people who have been reluctant to join in the past. If sitting on the sidelines and just observing is your thing, you can do just that with zero pressure from anyone. I hope some of the past NoVAMoMe participants will jump in and share their thoughts on the event to inspire the scairdy-cat lurkers out there to throw caution to the wind and come meet your pals!

Snubbies
Like any true red-blooded American who grew up watching cop shows, snubbies are probably my fav-o-rite handgun. Small and compact, they also have the added benefit of working every time you pull the trigger.

Of course, no discussion of snubbies would be complete without a quick WA video.

Snubbies most definitely do not suck. So show of hands - any snubby fans out there? Who carries one for self-defense?

Cigar of the Week

040625 diogenes Cigar April scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of the Romeo Y Julieta 1875 Reserve

Romeo Y Julieta 1875 Reserve

OK, so I have regaled you all with a review on this cigar previously, so I am not going to bore you with the details. Commonly available, great prices, and an uncommonly good cigar. If nothing else, it is a steady, reliable smoke. One of my "Go To" brands and it never disappoints.

So...

Let me talk about the smoking experience a bit. Do I smoke a lot? No. But I smoke cigars (and only cigars) just enough to know what I like and don't like. And a big part of a cigar is the experience that comes with enjoying one. In my last review I spoke of how an average whiskey can make even an average cigar better. Continuing that thought, an average cigar can make many situations better. Case in point. While the picture shows a nice display of cigar, weapon and flagon for ale, what happened was I tucked this one into my golf bag and headed out to play with the Tuesday Morning Geezers. It started well enough, but then the rain started. Gawd, after twenty years in the Army, I do not need practice to be miserable. So I pulled out the cigar and even though I was wet, cold, and in a hurry to finish the round, the cigar made it better. Smooth draw, easy smoking, a pleasant aroma. Even the other golfers came up and complemented me and asked if I had more. No. I did not. (Had I been winning I might have been more accommodating, but that's another story.)

So when you think about a cigar, it is not something where whiskey or bier is mandatory, although that is my favorite method. Sometimes it is just the perfect fit to the experience around you. Take that moment in stride and enjoy yourself.

Excellent, Diogenes! The 1875 is in my humidor. Thank you!

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!
