Gun Thread: Final January Edition!

012625 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the end of the first week of the American Renaissance?

Special Programming Note: If you want to discuss the playoff game tonight, have at it.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Guns of the Horde

Our pal EdL saves us again with this outstanding review!

Like many B&T products, the "Hush Puppy" pistol is a unique product with features not found anywhere else in the market today. B&T started with a standard 5th Generation Glock 19 and heavily modified it to produce the "Hush Puppy"

012625 edl 2 scaled.jpg

B&T mounted an Aimpoint Accro P2 red dot sight on the rear of the slide. But B&T didn't simply mount it on top of the slide. Instead, B&T moved the rear sights forward of the red dot sight before milling out most of the top of slide in order get the Accro P2 as low as possible to the shooter's line of vision. B&T also milled down the Accro's mount in order to lower it by a few more millimeters. This results in the red dot almost co-witnessing the iron sights. If the red dot sight is turned off, the iron sights remain usable thanks to the low mount of the Accro P2.

The unique feature of the "Hush Puppy" is its slide locking mechanism. Its switch (up position for normal operation, down position to lock the slide in place) harks back the USN SEAL teams' issued S&W Mark 22 Mod O pistols, which were the original "Hush Puppy" pistols. Unlike the originals, this new 'Hush Puppy" locks the slide in place by locking the barrel and slide in place when the pistol is fired. Since the Glock 19 uses the classic tilting barrel design pioneered by John Browning, keeping the barrel locked to the slide when fired will prevent the slide from moving.

The "Hush Puppy" suppressor is a two-stage design. Use just one to maximize the concealability of the pistol. Add the second stage to get maximum sound reduction. The first stage is just three inches long from the barrel threads to the muzzle. The second stage adds another three inches to the total length of the pistol. The suppressor uses wipes, which greatly increase the suppressor's capability to quiet gunshots given its size. Using just the first stage, it reduces 9mm subsonic ammunition's gunshot noise to that of a pellet gun. The downside of using wipes is that bullets actually pass through the wipes. After about ten shots, performance regarding noise will degrade as more and more bullets pass through the wipes. Therefore, only limited practice while using the wipes is possible. Your purchase comes in a hard case with custom foam cutouts complete with the pistol, two magazines, "Hush Puppy" suppressor, barrel cleaning rod, barrel cleaning brush, suppressor disassembly tool, two adjustable backstraps for the Glock 19, user manual for the Glock 19, and 100 rounds of 147 grain "Hush Puppy" ammunition.

But how does it shoot, you ask? Without the suppressor, using 150 grain Federal Syntech ammunition, the combination of the Glock 19 and the Aimpoint P2 Accro is outstanding once the Accro is zeroed properly. The target shown was placed at ten yards. Due to the limited life of the wipes, only a few shots were fired. The first picture shows a single shot from me with the suppressor at ten yards. The second picture shows a combination of Sharon (Willow's Apprentice) and Iris's efforts from ten yards. Not bad considering that both had only ten rounds of familiarization fire each before shooting the "Hush Puppy" with the suppressor.

Since this is B&T we're talking about, the price will automatically be the biggest negative to this firearm. MSRP is around $2,300. But if that's too much for you, B&T also offers the option to have your Glock 17, 19, 19X, 45, 47, and 49 modified to fit an Aimpoint Accro P2 like the "Hush Puppy" for $939. This cost is reduced to $389 if you can supply the Aimpoint Accro P2 yourself. If you decide that the "Hush Puppy" is for you, don't forget to add in another $200 for the tax stamp required for the suppressor. This isn't cheap, but considering that you're getting a semi-custom Glock 19 fitted with an Aimpoint Accro P2 (a premium red dot pistol sight), a unique suppressor, and a custom fitted hard case for all this and accessories, it's not an outrageous price.
