Hobby Thread - January 25, 2025 [TRex]

20250122-20250119-Jewelbracelet.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread and we are looking spiffy.

We gave the Ace of Spades Wheel of Hobbies(TM) a spin and the result shows the wisdom of the Wheel. It said HAND MADE JEWELRY. It also said some other things, so read below for more.

[Top Photo: From LadyL. This is a go to bracelet for me. It helps to keep me close to the Lord in stressful and discouraging times.]

The periodic table has 118 elements. Everything tangible on earth comes from some mix of those elements. Humans contain something like two dozen of those elements. Throw in the laws of physics and a divine touch and you've got yourself a world. It is remarkable to think about how many different ways those elements can be combined, formed and fashioned into what we see around us.

We wear clothes that are functional but reflect our personality. We add spice and personality with collectibles and hobbies. We surround ourselves with things that make us happy. We hold onto things that are sentimental or meaningful.

Things are often important to us because of how they came into our lives. A thing may be beautiful or functional on its own merits, but its importance is often not just the thing. It is the connection to people that we care about who gave it, made it, shared a memory with it, or otherwise had a touch to it.

That connection transforms an item into something worth more than the price tag. That connection gives value to a child's crayon drawing or macaroni art. That connection creates a silent union with that person, whether they are physically there with us or not. The tangible item takes on a deeper meaning for us in an intensely personal way.

Over the years, the Hobby Thread has hosted many stories of things created and built by the Horde. Many things have been built, given or received in honor of the silent union. This week is a jamboree of jewelry. Almost by definition, jewelry is intensely personal. We wear it or keep it near to us more than almost anything else we own. Those who make jewelry know this and their crafting becomes a way to create something that will become very personal.

If the Horde is going to talk bout making jewelry on the Hobby Thread, this thread can go in only one direction. Jewell has created a lot of wearable art for a lot of Hordelings. Some has a Horde touch, some was custom designed, and some came from her former Etsy shop.

Those who know Jewell or have followed the Sunday Morning Prayer Thread know she has encountered medical challenges. May she feel comfort, strength and love from the Horde and know how much the Horde loves her. She should also know how many lives she has touched. The pieces are pretty on their own, but the personal connection makes each piece made by Jewell a treasure.

Every piece you see in this post was made by Jewell. Thanks much to the Horde for sharing photos of their treasures to make this post possible.

Special thanks to Ben Had for, well... you know...doing Ben Had things. You are a force of nature.

Full disclosure: there are a lot of photos here, so say a prayer for Pixy's hamsters to keep the post stable. If we start having trouble loading or refreshing for comments, let me know.

[From olddog in mo. The top pic is a bracelet I ordered a week before my wife was scheduled for her Whipple surgery. Jewell contacted me prior to sending, worried it might be too large due to wife's significant weight loss from pancreatic cancer. Adjustments were made and a bracelet of "Hope" arrived before her surgery. Wife is still kicking. Jewell's bracelet and good surgeon were life saving.]

[From nurse ratched. I got the St Patrick's day bracelets 4 or 5 years ago and always get compliments. And I won the AoS bracelet! Love you, Jewells. I always think of you and send sweet thoughts your way when I wear your things. God bless you and keep you in the palm of His hand.]

20250121-BlueBell necklace.jpg

[From bluebell. This is a rosary she made for me, using a necklace sent to her by Ben Had. Not being Catholic herself, she had to look up how to make one and she did a perfect job. This was a surprise gift to me and I absolutely love it. It means the world to me that two people that I know mainly through cyberspace would give me such a beautiful and meaningful gift.]

20250119-JewellRosary.jpg

[From LadyL This gorgeous rosary was made by Jewels at the request of Ben Had, with beautiful stones supplied by Ben Had. It is a most treasured possession, and it is always hung on the bedpost nearest my head. I feel the wonder of the Lord with its presence there.]

[From LadyL This beautiful necklace was made by sweet Jewells. To me it symbolizes the love I have for Jewells and the rest of the Horde, aka "My People." I'm wearing it today in memory and honor of all that we have been through together in the last 8 years.]

Words of wisdom:

"Because despite all our troubles, when things are grim out in that wide round world of ours, that's when it's really important to have a good hobby." Posted by: tankascribe at June 22, 2024 07:41 PM (HWxAD).

As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. Your participation does not need to limited to the theme. All hobbying is welcome. However, politics, current events and religious debates can live in threads elsewhere. Play nice. Do not be a troll and do not feed the trolls.

If you have trouble finding something in the content or comments that resonates with you, there is something wrong with you. Even so, hijack the thread for your hobbying as you see fit. We will feature a different theme next time. Send thoughts, suggestions and photos of your hobbying to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Do mighty things.
