Gardening, Puttering and Adventure Thread, Sept. 21
Happy Autumn - tomorrow!
The photo above is extra-special:
This is the beautiful walkway that my brother created for the front of the house. It's awesome to have so many flowers that you can take bouquets and still have tons of flowers!
In the front to the right, you may see the dark red potato plants - the deer hit it pretty hard. They've left us alone for the most part. I'll send a closeup.
The vegetable garden is in the background. You can see the tomato trellis and maybe the okra, which is pretty tall now.
Miley
WOW. Just Wow!
Now we have a better understanding of some of your past posts about plants, too.
And as promised, a close-up of that potato plant in the front:
It's starting to grow back after being topped off pretty hard by the deer.
Yay! Is there something else edible in that photo?

Edible Gardening/Putting Things By
These are photos of my taro.
I live in Oregon, in the Willamette Valley, and we are considered a maritime / Mediterranean climate, which is dryer and cooler than taro likes - Nothing like SE Asia and Pacific islands where it is usually grown. It is doing pretty good, for being way out of its zone, though I think it really is a bit small.
I am growing it in a worm bin, which for me is a salvaged bath tub that I filled with some starter dirt, wood chips and worms, and then started putting in lawn clippings, and vegetable scraps from the kitchen and canning. To block the dirt from running out I put in some landscaping cloth over the drain. .
I dump my dishwater into it from hand-washing dishes, and collect the run-off and leachate (worm pee) in a five gallon bucket under the drain and pour that on my little fruit trees and berries. It seems to be doing the trees a lot of good. In the Spring I will dig half of the dirt out and put it on the garden as compost, and start again.
Taro need a lot of water, so dumping in a couple of gallons of dishwater every day seems to suit it well, and the worm bin processes the washing water and food bits and makes the worms happy. My next task is to figure out how much taro I have grown and then figure out how to cook it.
Kindltot
Anybody have a recipe for Kindltot? An adventurous project, and an attractive plant!

From By-Tor:
Chinese hot chili oil is easy to make. I used about 1 1/2 cups of chili flakes, equal parts avocado oil and sesame oil, half a teaspoon chopped garlic, and a homegrown habenero chili, diced.
Simmer at low for 10 minutes and jar it. It will stay good in the fridge for a long time. I like it better than sriracha for spicing up dishes.
Still seems too hot for me. Attractive, though. Anybody going to make this?

Plant I.D. Request
Hi KT and the horde,
Here’s a plant my 29 yo brain can’t remember the name of.
Details:
MN native, flowers now (same time as Asters,) with individual flowers about 1/4 inch around. IIRC it is wetland adjacent, and about 2 to 3 feet tall. Plant in pic is leaning against my front steps.
Thanks
Fritzy
