Hobby Thread - Sept 14, 2024 [TRex]

20240827-23hobbylobby1.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the horde in this little corner of the interweb. Instead of featuring a specific hobby, a spin of the Ace of Spades wheel of hobbies has come up with a theme of places where you hobby for this week.

Where do you do your hobbying? Do you have a dedicated space? Do you have a workbench or desk where you build, customize, maintain, repair, etc.? Did you make something custom? Did you cobble together odds and ends to make a spot for you to tinker? Is your space of choice in your basement, garage, guest room, shed, or elsewhere? Have you built and re-built over the years as you learned more what you wanted from your space? Do you have a wonderful space that is piled high with stuff that makes it unusable? Do you have an ideal space that you envision someday? Is it ideal because of the working area, accessibility to tools, storage, etc. or is it ideal because of the view and environment? Even if your hobbying happens elsewhere (SOTA and fishing, I am looking at you), do you have a working place to store and maintain your equipment?

Is your space something that you brought home from a working career or that incorporates aspects from your working life? Are you surrounded by shelving or do you need a place with a view? Are you a writer with the ability to be mobile with your laptop or notebook? Where do you like to write? Do you have a dedicated spot or do you like to move? Does your hobby require custom equipment - like a potting wheel for pottery? Are you a painter with a studio?

Or do you take over space on the kitchen table, dining room table or other household areas (not that there is anything wrong with that)?

TRex is again detailed for duty elsewhere in locations undisclosed, so looking for horde help to make this work and honor hobby thread etiquette. We are here to talk about places where hobbying happens. We are looking for places used by an individual rather than spaces in museums or businesses. Hobby spaces do not need to be elaborate - just suited to the user. As usual, keep this thread limited to hobbies. Politics and current events can wait for other threads. Play nice. Do not be a troll and do not feed the trolls.

Lurker in good standing Patches sent these photos of his scale model building workspace. Impressive variety - jets of all types, race cars, road cars, reference materials, and more. Unlike a lot of photos of workspaces on the interwebs, this space actually looks like it is used and enjoyed. It is a proper mix of organization and chaos.

Did you know that Disney animators used a specific type of desk? This animator was able to take his work desk with him when he left Disney:

Hobby spaces - don't worry about the hobby involved, but rather look more at the space, storage, accessibility, and design. You might see an idea that can help in your world:

Sheds are a thing - workshops, she sheds, craft spaces and more. Again, your hobbies may be different, but these have lots of ideas of space usage and design:

Words of wisdom:

"Because despite all our troubles, when things are grim out in that wide round world of ours, that's when it's really important to have a good hobby." Posted by: tankascribe at June 22, 2024 07:41 PM (HWxAD).

If workspaces are not your thing and you have trouble finding something in the content or comments that resonates with you, hijack the thread for your hobbying as you see fit. We will feature a different hobby next time around. Send thoughts or suggestions to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Ace of Spades medical coverage does not cover hoarding.
