The Week That Was Woke

Trump's Greendale rally, with "special guest," is scheduled to start at 7 pm Eastern/4 pm Mountain.

The New York Times is sad -- abortion mills are going broke!

John Sexton:

A couple weeks ago there was some surprising news out of New York. Planned Parenthood announced it would stop doing late-term abortions (those after 20 weeks) and also planned to close four clinics in the state. The problem in New York wasn't the legality of their business, it was the profitability. PP's president wrote in an opinion piece that because of inflation they were in trouble unless the state started directing more public money their way.

Today, the NY Times published a follow-up in the business section which makes the case that the business of abortion is not going well almost anywhere you look around the country. The story recounts the experience of a clinic in Washington DC which tried to expand in the Los Angeles area. It didn't go well.

...

Even clinics that do open find that most of their clients can barely afford their services. That means the clinics can't raise prices in response to the inflation we've all experienced over the past 2 years.

[Quoting the NYT:] Amy Hagstrom Miller, the C.E.O. of Whole Woman's Health, which operates six clinics in four states as well as one virtual clinic, said only two of them were currently profitable. "Whenever I talk to people about my margins," she said, "they're like, 'Are you kidding me?'"

Procedure rates -- which can run from $600 to many thousands for the rare abortions that take place late in a pregnancy -- certainly haven't kept pace with medical inflation, even though everything else about running a health care business, from insurance to equipment to payroll, has become more expensive.

There's some real irony here. Pro-life groups have spent decades campaigning against abortion and especially against late-term abortion. But it seems many clinics (like the ones in New York mentioned above) are now feeling pressure to stop performing these late abortions, not because of a change in the law but because of Bidenflation. I guess that's what they call a silver lining.

This is not going to shock you: the UK is post-Christian.

In order to make the Church of England more appealing to Modern Audiences, they're going to avoid using the word "church."

Church of England dropping word 'church' to be more 'modern'

Report looks at the language used by 11 dioceses to describe new worshipping communities

While they'll be keeping the word "church" in this fake organization calling itself the "Church of England," they'll be avoiding its use in establishing new "communities."

Formerly: Churches.

Dr. Foulger suggested that the Church of England might be moving away from using the word "church" as part of a cultural rejuvenation.

He said that the word "church" was not comprehensive enough "to describe what it is that these dioceses have been starting," adding that the phrase "new things" might be more appropriate.

The UK just gave a man three years of hard time for telling people how to join a protest and keep your anonymity.

Antifa does this every day -- but antifa are the approved Street Muscle of the Regime, so they get a pass.

But Regime dissidents can expect prison time for merely telling people where and when a protest will be.

Now, they are imprisoning "keyboard warriors," who express inciteful thoughts.

According to the local Lincolnshire Free Press, O'Rourke encouraged his 90,000 followers to join the protests and told them how to remain anonymous during protests. That is similar to many posts on the left by groups like Antifa.

O'Rourke wrote such postings as "People of Southport where the f**k are you, get out on the street," "give them hell lads," and "Sunderland, go on lads."

Notably, his counsel Lucia Harrington assured the court that her client wants to "re-educate" himself on these issues.

His self-imposed "reeducation" was not enough for Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight, who denounced O'Rourke and "[t]he flames fanned by keyboard warriors like you."

Lincolnshire Chief Superintendent Kate Anderson promised more such cases for those espousing disfavored views: "This charge demonstrates that we will take fast and decisive action against anyone suspected of sharing harmful content online. We retain a commitment to proactively police and keep people safe across the county."

Many others have been similarly charged. That includes first offender William Nelson Morgan, 69, who was seen holding a stick and refusing to disperse at a protest at a library in West Yorkshire. He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison even though he did not take part in rioting. While there can be legitimate charges and penalties for a failure to disperse, the roughly three-year sentence seems fueled on the content of his viewpoints rather than his specific actions.

I saw someone at Hot Air call British PM Keir Starmer "Two-Tier Keir."

Speaking of two tiers of justice: Corrupt Chicago Soros DA Kim Foxx -- last seen covering up for racial arsonist Jussie Smollett -- promises she won't prosecute any "peaceful" protesters.

We know the left defines all "protesters" on the left as "peaceful" or, at worst, "fiery but mostly peaceful."

Soros-backed Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx has announced that she will not prosecute "peaceful" protesters at the upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC), even extending this leniency to those committing misdemeanors.

Key Details:

Kim Foxx, backed by a $408,000 donation from a George Soros super PAC in 2016, announced she will not prosecute "peaceful" protesters at the DNC.

Foxx's policy extends to misdemeanors like disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, and even curfew violations, despite previous promises of stricter enforcement.

This leniency echoes her response to the 2020 riots, where she released hundreds of protesters, including those who caused property damage.

Norway is "increasingly concerned about Swedish criminal gangs."

Spoiler: the gangs are not actually Swedish.

Norway is becoming increasingly concerned about Swedish criminal gangs, already known for their crimes in Denmark, where they operate throughout the country and are linked to a number of serious violent crimes.

"It is serious. We are afraid that the development we have seen in Sweden will infect us", said Kjetil Tunold, head of the organised crime division at the Norwegian National Bureau of Investigation, told Swedish national broadcaster SVT on Sunday

One of the cases in which Swedish gang criminals are suspected of involvement is the explosion at a house in a housing estate in Dröbak, south of Oslo, last autumn. Three Swedes with gang connections were charged with attempted murder after the incident.

According to Tomas Staerk, head of investigations for Norway's Eastern Police District, several Swedish criminal networks have established themselves in the area.

"We are worried about the gross use of violence and that the Swedish gangs will recruit vulnerable young people to join them", he said, adding that he was particularly concerned about the crimes connected to drug trafficking.

"It is money laundering, economic crime, violence and threats", Staerk said.

...

On Friday, Denmark announced that it would introduce border controls with Sweden, following a resurgence of Swedish gang violence that has spilt over into Denmark in recent weeks and after Swedes were arrested on suspicion of several violent crimes in Denmark.

"The reality right now is that not only Denmark but large parts of the Nordic countries are feeling the consequences of Sweden's long-standing failed immigration and legal policies, and we take that extremely seriously," said Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard (Social Democrats, S&D) at a press conference on 14 August.

Wait, I thought these criminals were "Swedish" -- what does Sweden's immigration policy have to do with it?

Sweden, with a population of just 10 million, has the highest per capita rate of gun violence in the EU, with 55 fatal shootings in 363 incidents last year -- far more than the combined total of six fatal shootings in the other three Nordic countries.

America's Groomer Dad Tim Walz is the epitome of "positive masculinity," says some sissy.

Newsweek published "Tim Walz, the Kelce Brothers and a New Era of 'Positive Masculinity'":
Many know the term "toxic masculinity" and think of the overly dominant, often aggressive personality that shapes the discourse... But now, it seems as though we're headed toward a softer kind of masculinity, with politicians talking about fertility, football players dancing to Taylor Swift and a renowned Paralympic athlete cheering on his wife as she won Olympic gold.

[Positive masculinity] is thought to have been co-created in the early 2000s by Matt Englar-Carlson, founder and director of the Center for Boys and Men at California State University, Fullerton. He told Newsweek that the idea "creates space to realize that there's multiple ways to be a man."

...

Englar-Carlson is introduced in the Newsweek piece as an expert endorsing the idea that Tim Walz represents an evolutionary advance in men:

How Does Walz Display Positive Masculinity? As a white, heterosexual male who served in the military, taught in high school, was a football coach and spends his spare time hunting, Walz might not seem like the epitome of positive masculinity. But he isn't solely defined by these characteristics because he's also a family man, an advocate for women's rights and a champion of women in power... Englar-Carlson... said that Walz "check marks" a lot of the hallmarks that people think are representative of masculinity. And yet he also speaks to a more enlightened "archetype of men."

Recapping: as a white heterosexual who served in the military, coached football and hunts, Walz might "not seem like the epitome of positive masculinity"! But since he's also comfortable showing "more traditionally feminine traits" and "letting women take center stage," Walz might represent a net-positive new archetype.

David French nods. After he gets the okay from his wife to voice his opinion.

Biden's Commerce Sec. says she's not familiar with BLS job revisions

The Commerce Secretary isn't familiar with the huge economic news of nearly 1 million jobs disappearing into the ether on Wednesday.

She doesn't keep tabs on the numbers, but she has a "Woman's Ways of Knowing," so she's just the best.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo faced backlash after admitting unfamiliarity with a major revision to job numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dismissing concerns as "misinformation" from former President Donald Trump.

Key Details:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics revised its job numbers, revealing 818,000 fewer jobs were created than initially reported.

Raimondo dismissed concerns about the revisions, attributing them to misinformation from Trump.

Social media users and conservative commentators criticized Raimondo's unawareness and dismissal of the report.

Diving Deeper:

According to the NY Post, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo sparked controversy after admitting she was "not familiar" with a significant revision to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) job numbers during an ABC News interview on Wednesday. The BLS revised its previous job creation figures, revealing that 818,000 fewer jobs were created than initially reported, a revelation that has serious implications for the Biden administration's economic narrative.

The admission drew immediate criticism on social media. National Review's Charles Cooke expressed disbelief that the Secretary of Commerce would be unaware of such a significant economic report. Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich suggested that the administration's attempts to manage the economy were beginning to unravel, while conservative commentator Ned Ryun criticized the competence of the current administration, stating, "Holy hell. We are governed by idiots."
