Gun Thread: Gunz, Food And Semi-Open Thread to Discuss Democrat Party Chaos Edition!

072124 OV scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Q: Weasel, are you on vacation?
A: Why yes, yes I are on vacation!

Another short one this week, guys and gals. As I alluded to in the title above, I am on a sooper sekrit mission to an undisclosed location on the North Carolina coast where we're meeting an old friend for a week. The plan is for the girls to go sightseeing and shopping during the day, leaving FSJ and me to guard the house, smoke cigars, enjoy dog treats, and otherwise goof-off.

Insightful Weasel Political Commentary and Analysis on Biden Campaign Developments
Hahahahahahahahahaha! Suck it, Dems! Kinda crapped in your mess kit, didn't you?

P.S. You can even talk about food if you like!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

FUNdamentals
Did you think I forgot the fundamentals? Did you? I'd like to hear if you have adopted even a teensy part of WeaselDoctrine and if you have, what sort of results you are seeing.

A Navy SEAL. Note giant watch - pay special attention to this guy.

Our Pal 'Jer'

Do you think fundamentals and focused practice only apply to shooting?

Pay attention to the pilot's self-critique of the incident and his response. Anything sound familiar?

Guns of The Horde

Another bigly excellent submission by out pal Ed L, this week on the Colt Model 1909 Revolver

Colt Model 1909 Revolver

By 1905, the US Army committed itself to the path that led to the M1911 and the newly introduced .45 Automatic Colt Pistol (ACP) round. But even with the genius of John Browning and the engineers at Colt, that path took much longer than US Army Ordinance wanted. Fighting with the Moros in the Philippines demonstrated that the US Army badly needed a more modern .45 caliber sidearm than the Colt Single Action Army revolvers dragged out of retirement. Delays in development pushed US Army Ordinance to procure Colt New Service revolvers. In December 1908, US Army Ordinance ordered 6,000 Colt New Service Revolvers as an interim weapon until the new semiautomatic pistol was ready to enter service. Since the New Service was already in production for the commercial market, US Army Ordinance simply ordered revolvers right off the production line with relatively small changes. In all, the US Army took delivery of 19,503 revolvers. 19,153 were shipped to the Manila Ordinance Depot, where they were issued to troops in the field. The remaining 350 were shipped to Springfield Armory, MA. The USN took delivery of 1,000 revolvers. The USMC received 1,300. It's known that one of the Springfield Armory revolvers took part in the November 1910 pistol trials between the Colt and Savage prototypes as a control.

The stylized circular monogram with the letters "WGP" on the right side of the revolver beneath the rear sight are the initials of Major Walter G. Penfield, the military "Inspector of Ordinance" assigned to Colt. Since Major Penfield took over this position on January 2, 1911, his final acceptance stamp identifies this revolver as being delivered in 1911. The serial number indicates that Colt delivered this revolver in late winter or spring 1911, as the 1911 pistol trials wrapped up. It's unlikely that Major Penfield was at Colt during this time. From August 1909 through April 1911, Major Penfield served on multiple review boards under board chair Lieutenant Colonel John T. Thompson evaluating and writing reports on the prototype pistols submitted by Colt and Savage for Ordinance testing. Therefore, it's quite likely that his civilian deputy, Rinaldo A. Carr, performed most, if not all, inspection and acceptance functions during this period. His initials, "R.A.C." are stamped on all major components of the revolver, indicating provisional acceptance of the part prior to final assembly. Note the bright "fire blue" finish on the protruding pin contrasting with the finish of the rest of the revolver. The high condition of this example indicates that this pistol did not go to the Philippines or see much action.

Military specific requirements included walnut grips vice the hard rubber of the commercial models, military markings, and the serial number on the bottom of the butt as shown in the photo. The final shipment of Model 1909 revolvers left Colt on September 26, 1911, with the M1911 waiting in the wings.

Thank you so much for this Ed L! I am sure I speak for everyone when I say your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Katana Korner
So this week I received the now complete WeaselKatana from the togishi David Hofhine. In last week's thread I posted the following "before" video.

And now we have the "after" video.

The transformation has been, well, transformative. Dave characterizes it this way: "It was very challenging due to the starting condition of the blade, but I think the end result is very good."

Very Good? Well that is the understatement of the year.

Below are the more professional photos taken by Dave and featured a couple weeks ago.

All I have done is unwrap, clean and oil the blade according to Dave's specific instructions, and for now, it's in an out of the way place until I can get the display mounting details worked out. We're not yet done with this project, so stay tuned!
