DO YOU BELIEVE IN ONTs?

On this day, 44 years ago, the US hockey team, composed mostly of amateur players, beat the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3 in the first game of the medal round of the 1980 Winter Olympics. They would then go on to beat Finland and capture the gold. It was 44 years ago, I didn't know squat about hockey, but I remember how exciting it was. Looking back, it's easy to see that this was the catalyst for the resurgence of America after the malaise of Carter's term. We beat the Reds in hockey, Carter was defeated, the hostages came home and Ronald Reagan proceed to make America great again. All these years later I still tear up when I see a clip of the famous game winning call (Psst! There's one under the fold). Do we believe in miracles? OTD 44 years ago, we did.

I Don't Know How These People Sleep At Night

Red Bull thieves steal £850,000 worth of energy drink in staggering heist in Belgium

Not a lot to say, his was a few years back, but that's a lot of Red Bull. Plus I wanted an excuse to use the title for this post.

Mystery Picture

I'm linking the picture rather than embedding, because it might be considered NSFW

Someone posted a picture of a poster they saw at a bus stop in Poland. It's a drawing, barely more than stick figures, of a woman crying and a man peeing and the tears and piss mingle to...grow grass? It's titled 'miłość', which is the Polish word for love. I've seen it posted on several forums, and nobody seems to know what it means. Maybe the Horde can figure it out.

This Is Bizarre

2 Suicide Victims Shared Same Heart, Wife

Long story short, a man kills himself, his heart is donated, the man who receives the heart reaches out to the first mans wife to express his gratitude. They become friends, he winds up leaving his wife and marrying her, and then later on he commits suicide too. I'm thinking that she's the common denominator, but maybe it's true what they say: The heart wants what the heart wants. And this heart wanted that woman.

Stumped!

30 Questions Likely To Stump The ‘Sharp’ And ‘Vigorous’ Joe Biden

1. What day is it today?
2. What are the names of your grandchildren? (And how many do you have…?)
3. When is your birthday?
4. What is a woman?
5. Who’s the president of France?
6. What year is it?
7. When were you first elected to the Senate?
8. What are the main ingredients in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
9. What is aluminum foil made out of?
10. How many fingers are on your left hand?

There's more at the link, but I figure this is your chance to come up with some of your own.

Indoctrination

Government Schools Are Propaganda Machines

However, I concede it is undeniably true that homeschooled students—like any students or human beings, for that matter—can be propagandized by any type of ideology: right, left, center, or otherwise. I know of no person or teaching materials that are truly unbiased because to be so would entail having no opinions and providing all available information on a subject without any explanations. So, every teacher, parent, textbook, online course, or forum post is, by nature, biased in some way. Of course, this fact also means that government school or private school students are also susceptible to and recipients of propaganda daily.

Moreover, such propaganda is inculcated far more effectively and efficiently via government schools that continue to churn out obedient and often intellectually incurious citizens who rarely question the morality or composition of the state that rules over them. This assertion should be self-evident through obedience to mask mandates, pledges of allegiance to flags, continued support for America’s overseas “defense” campaigns, and the strong contention among many citizens that democracy and voting are salubrious for all of us.

And that's the real reason the left is so against home schooled kids: These are kids who they don't get to indoctrinate themselves with their poisonous ideology.

One More Reason Gen Z Sucks

Gen Z are treating employers like bad dates: 93% ghost interviews and 87% have not even shown up for their first day of work

Ghosting isn’t just for dating anymore. Now Gen Z are treating their would-be employers like bad dates and not showing up for job interviews or their first day on the job without as much as a phone call.
Employment website Indeed surveyed 1,500 businesses and 1,500 working people in the U.K. and found that job ghosting is rife, with 75% of workers saying they’ve ignored a prospective employer in the past year.
But the youngest generation of workers are by far the worst offenders.
A whopping 93% of Gen Zers told the global recruitment platform that they’ve flaked out of an interview.
Worse still, a staggering 87% managed to charm their way through interviews, secure the job, and sign the contract, only to leave their new boss stranded on the very first day.
Their reason for doing so? According to the survey, it makes them “feel in charge of their career.”
But it’s having the opposite effect on businesses left high and dry: More than half of businesses surveyed said that ghosting has made hiring more difficult.

You know what you are McFly? You're a slacker.

Losing My Religion

Iranians are becoming less religious

This isn't an article, it's a study, but some interesting data bits:

While 32% of the population identifies as Shi’ite Muslim, around 9% identify as atheist, 8% as Zoroastrian, 7% as spiritual, 6% as agnostic, and 5% as Sunni Muslim. Others stated that they identify with or follow Sufi mysticism, humanism, Christianity, the Baha’i faith, or Judaism, among other worldviews. Around 22% identified with none of the above.

• Approximately half of the population reported losing their religion. On the other
hand, 41% did not report significant changes in religious or non-religious views
during their lifetime. Around 6% of the population said they had converted from
one religious orientation to another.

• Around 60% reported that they do not pray, while around 40% differed in their
reported frequency of praying, among whom over 27% reported praying five times
a day

What leapt out at me is that “none” and “Atheist” combined is almost as large a group as those who identify as Shi'ite.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by not tonight:

ETAI forgot to ask a question of the computer literate Morons. My computer is in my office, which is located maybe 25 yards from where the router is in the house. I connect to the internet with a USB wifi adapter. This works fine. However, I also have a hard drive that I've ripped all my media too, and it runs as a Plex server. When I try and stream something to watch on the home TV, my computer has taken it into its head to disconnect from the internet. Under wifi in settings it says "no networks found". All I have to do to fix it is unplug the adapter and plug it back in and it connects right back to the internet. This only seems to happen when I am streaming media onto my home network. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
