Gun Thread: Numbero Uno of el 2024 Edition!

2024 010724 scaled.jpg
(has begun)

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving hell fire did it get to be January of 2024? Why, it seems like 2023 was practically just seven days ago!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

LaPierre is OUT! LaPierre is OUT!!
Oh, wonderful, joyous and happy day! Effective January 31st, Wayne LaPierre is OUT as head of the NRA!

As I have said a bunch of times, this guy has drawn too much negative attention from within the organization and had become nothing more than a major distraction from the stated purpose of the organization. I don't know if any (or all) of the accusations of financial irregularities are true, but even if a few of them have merit, well, I truly hope he suffers the legal consequences. Adios Wayne!

Here are a couple perspectives on the news from the online 2nd Amendment community.

What do all y'all think? Good news? Bad news? Not sure?

As Promised, Fundamentals Harping

Q: Weasel, are you a weasel of your word?
A: Why yes, yes I am.

Here's the tactical guy with a Really Big Watch reviewing how to grip a handgun.

Great grip mechanics won't get you far if you don't rack the slide, but lawd knows a giant watch helps.

Mas Ayoob with tips for older shooters. Maybe giant watches help us old guys with failing eyesight tell time.

Beretta Factory and Custom Shop Tours

Here's a brand we don't discuss here a lot really. Why do you think that is?

I have the 92 FS INOX which is a really great shooter, although I haven't had it out in a while. Anybody else a fan of the Beretta?

Q: Weasel, Why did the Beretta 92 become so popular?
A: If only we knew. If only we knew.

Norma Ammo Factory Tour
As long as we're looking at guns being made, let's take a peek inside the Norma Ammunition factory for funsies.

I have a bunch of loaded Norma rifle ammo and reloading components, but don't have much experience with using them. What do you think?

Are you buying ammo?

Cigar of the Week

010724 Antano Gran Reserva 3 scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Joya de Nicaragua Antano Gran Reserva

I've reviewed several Joya de Nicaragua cigars here before, and noted that the company is the oldest cigar outfit in Nicaragua, opening prior to the exodus of Cuban growers and makers that has led to Nicaragua's becoming the center of the non-Cuban cigar universe. The Antano was one of the sticks that put the company on the map in the premium cigar world. Haven't tried it - it's reportedly a powerhouse stick that would probably be above my strength preference - but the company did a slick thing and took the same blend, but aged the filler for a few extra years first. This mellows the experience.

The Antano Gran Reserva, I figured, was more in my lane. And so it is. A beautiful dark brown, softly box-pressed cigar, it's soft in the hand and has a rich sweet aroma before lighting. The draw was easy, the smoke as voluminous and thick as any I've yet seen, the burn line required little touching up. For flavors, a rich earthy and tobacco sweetness best sums it up for me. This stick falls in the medium-full spot on the spectrum. You can find it online for around $7.

Bigly excellent as always, rhomboid! Thank you!

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

This week's mailbag entry is from our pal WTM. Great one! I would not mess with Granny AK who has obviously been buying ammo and practicing fundamentals.
