The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

As if you needed another example of the fecklessness and unimportance of the Republican party in New York, here is a well-meaning but absolutely ridiculous "answer" to New York City's problems, from a former Lieutenant Governor no less!

By the way, Betsy McCaughey had a long pause (1998-2010) in her membership in the Republican party because she threw a hissy-fit when she wasn't kept on the ticket for Pataki's second term as governor (the last Republican governor of NY). And in New York, political philosophy is subordinate to the acquisition of power and wealth to an extent that is breathtaking in its singlemindedness.

Anyway, here is McCaughey's fix for NYC, and I didn't even bother to quote it...those are the headings to her blather.

Here are four ways to save New York City as residents flee crime and fiscal failure

• Deter freeloading migrants from coming to New York.
  
• Stop the city from descending into lawlessness.
  
• Cut taxes.
  
• Protect New York's Jews.

Stating the obvious may be important to keep those things in the public consciousness, but McCaughey doesn't seem to understand that the NYC of the 1990s simply does not exist any more. The voting bloc that decided that 20 years of societal decay and rampant crime was enough, and elected Giuliani and then Bloomberg, has moved to the suburbs or been subsumed by the incredible influx of the 3rd World into the city.

That "beautiful mosaic" (screw you, Jimmy Carter) has conspired to destroy the cohesion and shared love of the city that protected it in fits and starts throughout its history. In fact, those new residents of NYC are themselves a huge part of the crime problem...including some of the attacks on Jews.

The lack of civic pride has led to unbelievable voter apathy, which gives the few dedicated voters huge power. And the Democrat/Socialist apparatus takes full advantage of that small number of voters. That has led to a city that is governed by the worst excesses of a tiny but dedicated leftist cabal that is hellbent on consolidating all power in NYC...and using it to further their political ends and to enrich themselves.

They have succeeded. They have destroyed middle class housing. They have destroyed small businesses. They have destroyed the police department. They have driven many large businesses out of the city. They have catered to the base instincts of each minority group that is willing to sell them their votes. And worst of all they have eroded the grand sense of New York City as the center of the world. Sure, that is pompous and arrogant, but that is what drove NYC's success for a very long time.

Maybe McCaughey should take a look at the policies of her corporate Republican masters and try to figure out whether maybe...just maybe...unfettered immigration wasn't an unalloyed good thing. And maybe a peek at the politics of division that has created the perfect storm in NYC.

It's cute that she is shutting the barn door years after the animals have bolted. I guess being a third tier politician in the minority party in a corrupt Democrat hell-hole doesn't pay very well, and she has to make a living somehow.
