The Morning Report — 5/8/23

sorryfatcharlesjoe.jpg

Good morning, kids. With everything going on, probably the least crucial item on the docket is the fight over the debt ceiling. Let's face it; unless we are completely wrong about deficits and debts in terms of the consequences to the government as opposed to the ordinary citizen, we are tens of trillions in the hole and we're probably past the "singularity" insofar as we'll never escape it.

In any case, Kevin McCarthy actually forced Joey Sponge-Brain Shits-Pants to cave on his plan to raise it $1.5 trillion in exchange for so-called spending "cuts" of $4.5 trillion. It remains to be seen if these are indeed actual cuts as opposed to the usual cuts to the rate at which we increase our debt. But be that as it may, this exchange between Greek midget George Stephanopoulos and Fed Chair Janet Yellen raised an eyebrow, and curdled my guts.

Anchor George Stephanopoulos said, “Of course, there’s always the chance for this negotiation that you don’t reach a deal, and then it comes back to the president. He said on Friday night that he is not ready. The 14th Amendment that it should not be questioned. And the implications would be the United States would continue to issue debt, saying it is unconstitutional not to. The president says he is not ready to do that, but it does not seem like he took it off the table. Is it still a possibility?

Anchor George Stephanopoulos said, “Of course, there’s always the chance for this negotiation that you don’t reach a deal, and then it comes back to the president. He said on Friday night that he is not ready. The 14th Amendment that it should not be questioned. And the implications would be the United States would continue to issue debt, saying it is unconstitutional not to. The president says he is not ready to do that, but it does not seem like he took it off the table. Is it still a possibility?

Stephanopoulos said, “But is it on the table? Is it something that could be considered? You said there is no way this could be done without Congress. Is that a hard and fast decision?”

Yellen said, “All I want to say is that it is Congress’ job to do this. If we fail to do it, we will have an economic and financial catastrophe, and there is no action that President Biden and the U.S. Treasury can take to prevent that catastrophe.”

Stephanopoulos asked, “I’m still not exactly clear on whether it’s on the table or off the table. Is it a break glass in case of emergency option?”

Yellen said, “Look, I don’t. I don’t want to consider emergency options. What’s important is that members of Congress recognize what their responsibility is and avert what will surely be, regardless of how it’s handled, what option is used to handle it, an economic and financial catastrophe.”

Stephanopoulos asked, “It sounds like you’re saying you don’t want to, but you may have to.”

Yellen replied, “Well, what to do if Congress fails to meet its responsibility, there is simply no good options. And the ones that you’ve listed are among the not good options.”

There is absolutely no love lost between me and Congress, but for this soiled, ancient dishrag, whose ideologically driven ineptitude greased the wheels for the economic collapse we are facing to demand Congress "do its job" is just chutzpocrisy beyond belief. Kabuki-bukkake theatre notwithstanding, Kevin McCarthy has done his job. My preference is for them to put forth a program that abolishes the entire federal bureaucracy as soon as possible, pass a balanced budget amendment and one which puts an absolute limit on spending tied to a very small percentage of GDP. But, that is a pipe dream, wrapped in an LSD trip inside a drunken stupor.

But Zorba the geek is egging her on to urge Joey to declare himself emperor and just raise the debt all by hisself. Of course, it would all be completely kosher and Constitutional! I'll be the first to admit that I'm no Mark Levin, but of all the amendments to that document, arguably the most bastardized has got to be the 14th. Besides the complete misreading of who and who is not a citizen, in the attempt post Civil War 1 to ensure that former black slaves and their descendants were considered as such, there are these sections pertaining to debt:

Section 4: The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

Section 5: The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Now, I've read those sections and the previous three several times just to make sure that I'm not missing anything but absolutely nowhere in there does it give the Executive branch the authority to unilaterally raise the national debt for any reason whatsoever. So what the actual fuck is George Stephanopoulos talking about?

As a theoretically co-equal branch of government it is Congress, specifically the House, that has the purview of budgetary and taxation matters. Essentially the crux of the biscuit here is Homunculopoulos getting all hot and horny for Joey to just act as a dictator while prancing around in the skin suit of the 14th Amendment and demanding respect.

Meh. Is this really so important given the fact that whatever red pubic hair of a barrier we have at the southern border is about to vanish on Thursday, despite the fact that among the nearly million-strong horde of third world peasantry are a large number of hardened criminals and terrorists?

Not to mention the complete upending of the concept of the rule of law, when thugs and psychopaths are unleashed on society in a planned campaign of political anarcho-terrorism and any citizen who dares defend himself gets the book thrown at him.

Perhaps this does get lost in the sauce with everything else happening. But it's just one more indicator that we're heading for disaster.
