Friday Night ONT: The Honkening

If you haven't noticed, out normally quiet and polite neighbors to the north are dealing with a bit of a sticky wicket. Fed up with the heavy handed government imposition of mandates and other tyrannical actions in the name of “fighting COVID”, hundreds of thousands of truckers have descended on Ottawa and are parked in the streets, effectively paralyzing the nation's capitol. While honking. Lots and lots of honking. Justin Trudeau claims he has COVID and has fled the capitol in the face of these “fringe elements”. What will be the final result of this Freedom Convoy? Will the Canadian government acquiesce to at least some of their demands and status quo be restored? The premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan have announced an end to all COVID related restrictions, will other provinces follow suit? Those of us who are at least 29 remember the Solidarność movement from the 1980s, which actually started kinda the same way. Two things about that comparison: Communist Poland was a much more oppressive regime than Trudeau's Canada, and the world is not currently blessed with leaders like Thostaer, Reagan and John Paul II. I even saw one person going on earnestly about how, since Canada was basically founded by loyalists who left the US after the revolution, they were finally having their Boston Tea Party. Not sure about that one.

In any event, this being 2022 and all, the event has generated thousands of memes, and tonight's Friday night meme collection is dedicated to....The Honkening.

True to form, those magnificent autists of 4-chan pinpointed and published his location before the speech was even finished. You know, no matter how many times I hear this song, I just can NOT seem to sing, either out loud or in my head, the word "truckin" in the line "roll this truckin' convoy". I use another similar sounding word.

The truckers even brought in the big guns.

The police in Ottawa reportedly started calling tow companies to start removing the trucks. Everyone they contacted told them that they were unavailable because they all had COVID. Heh. There is an unconfirmed report that Trudeau asked the army to make plans to start removing the truckers, only to be told “Yeah, we won't be doing that”. If true, my respect for the Canadian military, already high, has gone up a few notches. Would that police and military leadership down here demonstrated more of a fealty to the Constitution and a willingness to refuse unconstitutional orders. Of course, the convoy is insanely peaceful.

Last night I mentioned a comparison between the so-called CHAZ and what the truckers have created in Ottawa. Guess that's what happens when you start with people who are accustomed to getting things done instead of people demanding that everything be done for them.

ETA: To be clear, I don't think Canadians are at the "abolish" point. But "alter" is certainly on the table.
