The Morning Rant

REASONS FOR OPTIMISM

0. They're still obsessed with Trump. The Bad Orange Man will never have to pay a cent in rent for the rest of his life, he's living inside so many of their tiny little heads. Of course, he encourages this. They're not mentally stable to begin with, so this is just pushing them, little by little, closer to the edge.

1. The 2022 midterms are looking increasingly bad for Democrats. The Democrats' poll numbers are tanking badly as the Biden administration lurches from one failure to another.

2. A number of Biden administration attempts to implement vax mandates have been halted by the federal court. One of the courts (5th Circuit Court of Appeals) cited 'grave statutory and constitutional issues'. When a court uses language like that, that's an indication of a serious problems. Almost like the Biden legal brainiacs didn't do their homework.

There have been, I believe, 3 of these, 3 court-ordered stays of Biden's mandates, one for federal workers, one for federal contractors, and I forget the who was the target of the third mandate. The point is, the Biden administration is losing important legal battles.

4. Meanwhile, articles such as How Does This [Pandemic] End? and When Can the U.S. Declare Victory Over Covid? are appearing in the NY Times, and Where I Live, No One Cares About COVID in the Atlantic (links are to archive.is). It sounds like they're taking two steps back from the panic porn they've been feeding us for the last year and a half. Now I tend to agree with ace that they're not doing this because they now realize the damage that they're doing to the country, but rather "out of terror for the coming carnage of 2022 if the Democrats go to the polls with more Lockdowns Forever and Masks For Toddlers messaging."

One of the 'ettes on the Sunday book thread remarked that she's in SoCal and masking is rare down there, too. Yes, even in a state governed by the tyrant Gavin Newsom.

I liken in to the first Narnia Book, the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, where all of Narnia is under an interminable cold spell (where it's always winter, but never Christmas), but then you hear drops of water dripping from icicles (they're melting!) and then a brief glimpse of sunlight through grey, leaden skies, not much, just enough to let you know that spring is coming and nothing can stop it. That's the way I feel. I looked in on a few college football games on broadcast TV recently, which provided plenty of crowd shots, and not only were the stadiums packed, and there weren't very many masks visible at all. Even though I live in one of the most locked-down areas of the country, it makes me happy that there are other parts of the country where life looks like it's back to normal.

5. For a party that controls all 3 branches of government, you would think that they'd be rolling out their agenda with an attitude of confidence and certainty. But they're all jittery and panicky, like they're afraid it isn't going to work.

Jen Rubin sounds very unhappy:

"Democracy is hanging by a thread". A potential loss of an appropriations battle is equated to democracy itself. Like our entire form of government is going to change (to what, exactly?) if the Democrats can't get enough votes to pass Biden's Bloated Boondoggle.

Victor Davis Hanson asks the question, Why Is the Left Worried Suddenly About the End of Democracy? After listing a train of abuses they should be concerned about but aren't, he gives the real reasons:

The Left expects to lose power over the next two years—both because of the way it gained and used it, and because of its radical, top-down agendas that never had any public support.

After gaining control of both houses of Congress and the presidency—with an obsequious media and the support of Wall Street, Silicon Valley, higher education, popular culture, entertainment and professional sports—the Left has managed in just 11 months to alienate a majority of voters...

In other words, leftist elites are terrified that democracy will work too robustly.
Social media's blue-check mafia are shrieking about how "one piddly senator from West Virginia can hold up the president's entire agenda", and here once again we see a dreadful ignorance of basic civics that is endemic to progressives. It's not that "democracy" hangs by a thread. Rather it's Democratic control of the Senate that hangs by a thread. This is what a close vote looks like.

Biden "won" a very close election. He was not given a sweeping mandate to do whatever he wants. The left is overplaying its hand. Again.

Friday Who Dis: Piper Laurie has some impressive acting chops spanning several decades, and you should click on the link to read her bio on imdb.com. She starred with Rock Hudson in the 1952 comedy Has Anybody Seen My Gal with William Reynolds, a 'B' actor who did most of his work in TV, in a supporting role.
