History Minute

An Archaeological Dig Reignites the Debate Over the Old Testament’s Historical Accuracy

Interesting article about an archaeological dig at what may very well be the legendary King Solomon's Mines. There's a good bit about the two schools of thought in biblical archaeology. What I find interesting about biblical archaeology is not the lack of archaeological confirmation of any given bible story, but the fact that there's never been any discoveries that disprove history as recounted in the bible. If it was all just mythology, you'd think there there would be some glaring contradictions with discovered reality. This article talks about an interesting concept, that many of the societies in the bible may be “archaeologically invisible”. In other words, there existed societies of high culture and accomplishment, but being nomadic in nature they didn't leave behind any artifacts that have withstood the ravages of time.

What Ben-Yosef has produced isn’t an argument for or against the historical accuracy of the Bible but a critique of his own profession. Archaeology, he argues, has overstated its authority. Entire kingdoms could exist under our noses, and archaeologists would never find a trace. Timna is an anomaly that throws into relief the limits of what we can know. The treasure of the ancient mines, it turns out, is humility.

Fascinating stuff.

Thursday Night Game

I'm not so good at this stuff because I don't play many modern games (and I can't think of one for Civilization, other than “Weirddave dominates, rules world ”), but let's try one for an old school game:

For The People

Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Force Employer to Pay as Much as $1 Million Per Vaccine Injury If It Enforces Biden’s Mandate

A state lawmaker in Oklahoma is bringing forth a bill to fine employers as much as $1 million per vaccine injury if they enforce Biden’s unlawful federal vaccine mandate.
Oklahoma’s Senate Bill 1106, the “Citizen Health Mandate Protection Act,” was submitted on Friday by State Sen. Rob Standridge. It is aimed at both public and private entities and individuals that mandate vaccines or other medical treatments as a condition of employment.
Employers who force medical treatments onto unwilling employees could be liable for $1 million in punitive damages if injured by that treatment, including forced Covid vaccinations.

This may have been overtaken by events. Since the Fifth Circuit ruled against OSHA, don't companies lose their immunity to vaccine related lawsuits if they mandate vaccination? Good for him, anyway.

Now, factcheck.org says that what this doctor is saying has been proven wrong, but they appear to be talking about claims made in the full clip which can be found here. I have not had time to watch the longer interview, but nothing in their article seems to pertain to the section of the interview embedded above. In any event, if factcheck told me that grass was green I'd need to see independent confirmation.

Troll Level: Elite

Here, the British PK team is enchanted by Polish fans during the humiliation ritual

During the Europa League match in Warsaw between Legia Warsaw and British Leicester City on Thursday, the Polish fans rolled out a giant banner with the Polish strongman champion Mariusz Pudzianowski and the text “Kneel before His Majesty” just when it was time for the obligatory humiliation ritual there Western European teams are expected to kneel before Black Lives Matter. The Polish fans, who knew of the British ‘constant kneeling in the face of the American violence, had prepared a banner that could be rolled out in a flash.

Heehee. Brilliant

They Can Never Take Away Our Freedom

Oxi Day and “Freedom or Death.” Lest we forget

In the weeks before Oct. 28, 1940, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini had gathered his massive war machine on the Greek border with Albania. Mussolini had heavy armor, artillery and tanks. He had thousands of fighter planes and hundreds of thousands of soldiers, well fed and well equipped.

The Greeks were poor. They had none of that. They were outnumbered by 10 to 1. There was no Greek war machine, and no Greek Air Force, just a handful old WWI fighters from which pilots could toss hand grenades out as bombs, but nothing more.

It was then that Mussolini delivered his ultimatum to Greece:

Capitulate and allow the Italian occupation to proceed, and in exchange he would not destroy the country nor slaughter its people.

All the Greeks had to do was kneel to Mussolini in and they would live.

Other nations had capitulated. And now it was Greece’s turn to kneel. The deadline for the ultimatum was set at October 28, 1940. At about 3 a.m. the Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas gave his answer to the Italian ambassador:

“Oxi.”

No.

Help, Help, I'm Being Repressed!

Monty Python Comedian John Cleese Cancels Himself "Before Someone Else Does"

Seems the special snowflakes at Cambridge University got art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon canceled, for doing an impersonation of Adolf Hitler. Hearing this, Cleese canceled his own scheduled appearance at the university because he had done the same in his Monty Python days.

Problematic

Here's what you should know about babywearing and cultural appropriation

Human beings have been carrying their infants in various types of slings from time immemorial, across the globe. Here's why that's not allowed when westerners do it. It's all such bullshit. I used to carry baby Little in a Baby Bjorn all the time (when I culturally appropriate, it's from the Swedes). In fact, it was only the fact that I was wearing a baby that kept me from getting into a fistfight at Ground Zero when Little was about six weeks old. It keeps your hands free while securing the baby safely. “Cultural appropriation”? What garbage. Know what the proper term for adopting successful strategies from other cultures is? “Human progress”.
