Mid-Morning Art Thread
Gethsemane
Carl Bloch
One of the pleasures of doing an Art Thread is the occasional surprise, and this piece is one of them! Not that it is anything magnificent; I think it is a very competent piece done by an accomplished artist, but without the emotional power of many other religious works. But what surprised me is the subject. I knew the word "Gethsemane," and not much else. I remember visiting or perhaps just driving past when I was a callow youth without a functioning synapse in my head. A quick visit to Catholic.com provided a start.
Art is emotional and historical and commentary and sometimes just pretty. Or not, but it is usually worthwhile, even if it points one away from the art and down a rabbit hole of discovery.
