France Will Require Vaccine Passports for Everyday Life; If You Get Caught in a Cafe or Restaurant Without One, You Can Be Prosecuted and Sent to Prison

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that COVID-19 vaccine passports would soon be required for people to visit nonessential places like restaurants and tourist attractions.

Macron said the new policy would start in August, Agence France-Presse reported, citing Macron's televised address.

The country will be using a "health passport" program in which people can share a QR code or certificate with establishments to show they are vaccinated against COVID-19, recently recovered from the virus, or have had a recent negative COVID-19 test.

"If we do not act today, the number of cases will continue to increase," Macron said in the address, according to France 24.

Just over 36% of France's population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

There were 1,260 new coronavirus cases in the country on Monday, France 24 reported.

And yes, you'll go to jail if you attempt to live a normal life without your internal passport.

People unable to present a valid health pass risk up to six months in prison and a fine of up to €10,000 (£8,500), according to the draft text of the law, while owners of "establishments welcoming the public" who fail to check patrons' passes could go to jail for a year and be hit with a €45,000 fine.

While 66% of French adults have received one dose and 53% are fully vaccinated, the number of first doses being administered had, in common with many western countries, started slowing as the campaign came up against more vaccine-hesitant or hard-to-reach groups.

Two vaccine centers were "ransacked" in protest of the new fascist laws.

Vandals broke into the vaccination centre in the village of Lans-en-Vercors, near Grenoble in eastern France, on Friday night. They flooded the site using fire hoses and ransacked syringes and other equipment, according to local paper Le Dauphine' libe're'.

Anti-vaccine graffiti was found painted on the building, according to AFP, including "1940", "Vaccine = genocide", and the Cross of Lorraine, a symbol used by the French Resistance during the Second World War. The vaccination centre has since been moved to another site in the village.

On Sunday morning, a fire damaged the temporary vaccination centre in Urrugne in south-west France, near the Spanish border. The fire is being treated as arson, prosecutor Jerome Bourrier in the local town of Bayonne wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
